iTunes help needed please!

about half a week ago, I installed the new version of iTunes. however, since then i have not been able to connect to the iTunes store, and it just tells me to check my connection.
thing is, my internet connection is perfectly good.
i thought it might be to do with the firewall blocking the latest version of iTunes, but when I looked in the list of programs and firewall preferences in my anti virus, it said all connections were allowed from iTunes to the internet.
so why wont it connect me?
i looked in the help section, and it said to change the internet coding or something, but i dont want to as i don't know exactly what it'll do and i'm afraid i might muck it up.
so can anyone tell me how to get connected to the iTunes store?
help will be much appriciated
