Do ipods come with itunes software?

Hey, sorry if this has been posted before - just a quick query about ipods/itunes.

Basically I'm thinking of getting an ipod nano but I was wondering if all ipods came with itunes on a disk or is the only way of getting it by downloading it from the internet?

I was planning on using a computer with no internet access to put songs onto the ipod as I only need to transfer songs off CDs, I wasn't planning on downloading any etc so I was just wondering if you were supplied with itunes on a disk when you buy the ipod?

Many thanks for any help/advice!

My iPod Mini came with an copy of iTunes on a CD, but it was an old copy a few version behind the current.

I suppose that if you are only intending to rip CDs then any version would be OK. If you don't want to connect this PC to the internet then download the current version on a different PC and transfer it to your PC with a memory stick or similar. You can then start ripping your CD collection straight away.

Personally I would recomend that you do connect the PC (or rip the CDs on a different connected PC) as iTunes can access the Gracenote database and obtain album and track names, plus download cover art etc. You face a hell of a lot of typing if you don't and you can't really use an iPod without track names etc.

Apple no longer ship iTunes with their iPods.

You have to download it.

I got an ipod years ago and it came with charging plug for the connection wire and a cd with software and manual and the packaging was huge!

My father got a ipod video for Christmas and the packaging is now tiny and just has a usb cable and some quick start instructions and a few other accessories. There is no cd in it and also you have to plug your ipod into your computer or laptop to charge it, there is no plug (which you can buy separately). sadly his laptop does not have a powered usb port so cannot charge it from that.

The packaging is smaller and its easier but I cant help thinking they may have gone too minimal!

Then again my ipod came with a firewire cable as standard and none of the computers or laptops in the house has a firewire port and I spent all christmas trying to buy a usb cable from somewhere that had stock! argh!

You could always download the latest itunes and just put it to disc, if your computer has a cd drive

Ah yes, my iPod 3G came with Firewire cable, iTunes CD, case, remote control, dock, mains charger. The good old days!

Anyway, download the software on another machine and stick it on a CD, USB stick, or it may even fit on a floppy!

It doesn't come with iTunes since by not having to fit a cd in they can make the packaging smaller. Of course they could probably included iTunes on the iPod then install it from there but then they'd have to ensure it got deleted so as to not take up space. Add to this the fact that they regularly release new versions and fixes etc, for which you need the internet and you can understand why they don't bother - the vast majority of people with an iPod will have access to the internet.

Thanks for all the help - much appreciated!

If I was to put itunes onto a CD or onto a USB stick how would I go about doing that?

go to http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/

click on the download button. Save the .exe file to your desktop. Once its finished drag and drop it to the USB stick.

Take it ti the computer you want to install itunes on. Plug in USB stick. Double click on the .exe and away you go!

My 60GB Video IPod came with the CD and I only bought mine in September 2006. I use to have the 30GB one and like many have said that it came with the CD, firewire cable and charger unit.

That's one before the latest revision (yours will be 5G, currents are 5.5G, and 5G came in 30/60GB, 5.5G in 30/80GB). Same as first gen nanos and shuffles came with the CD, but neither second gen models do.
