If it is written as an hour with one writer then it counts as 1 but sometimes Emmerdale stick two together which count as two as they were written as two different episodes! You can tell if there are two writers credited perhaps. EE is the only soap where I have noticed two writers on one half hour episode!

EE has to have more than 1000. I know they reset the episdoes back to 0 a long time ago. But 2, 3 and now 4 times a week - it just doesn't add up.

How is Emmerdale only 4582.

It has 5 Episodes a week so in a year anyways would have 1800 episodes!

Not quite sure what maths you are using but 5 episodes a week equals 260 episodes a year.

Emmerdale used to be on twice a week, then three times, four and five it's now on 6 nights a week.

EE started in 1985, when it went thrice weekly in 1994 the episode count started again at 001 and once again in 2001 when it went four days. There has been over 3300 episodes.

They do sometimes 're-start the counter', as it were.

For example, The Bill is now in its 480s. Presumably the 'big three' have had to do the same at some point.

As far as I'm aware, Coronation Street's rare one hour specials are one episode, but Emmerdale's are usually 2 episodes, whether it's a one hour special or a double episode.

As of today ITV duty office confirmed tonights episode numbers as:

Emmerdale 4590
Coronation Street 6484

To the poster who earlier mentioned how Emmerdale is only on Ep 45**, well it took 23 years to get to episode 2000, and then only 10 more years to get to episode 4000, it will now only take 6 years to get to episode 6000 as the episodes have increased over the years from 2 to 3, to 5 and now 6 a week.

From what I can gather the episode number jumped from 999 to 1, missing out 1000, does anyone have any info about this, as looking at the episode numbers on wikipedia there seems to be quite a few anamolies in the 1970's.

Yes, thats waht I said! 'cos the numbers usually had three digits so they reset I think. Anamolies, such as? Apparently there was one occasion when Doris Speed was ill and they stuck parts of two episodes together to make one but they counted as two or something like that!
