Doctor Who - Daleks in Manhattan (Helen Raynor)
The first non-RTD Dalek story since 'Dalek' in 2005, so I expect it to be slightly different in style.
I'm not an RTD basher or anything, but the Daleks in Doomsday weren't as spinechilling as the Daleks in Parting of the Ways (I know they're written by the same man), and I worried that RTD would continue to use the light-hearted style for the next Dalek story. Hopefully, Helen's script will bring a new (or rather the 'old') edge to the Daleks - ruthless, gliding, loud killing machine ... things. Anyone care to speculate on this specific story? |

From what I have read, online there will be a real twist in the story, going in a different direction

Well, Helen Raynor's Torchwood episode was one of the best so I'm looking forward to this. Regarding RTD, The Parting Of The Ways was a great episode (as was Bad Wolf before it) and YES he dropped the ball in the series 2 finale, the Daleks were more jokey, and thousands of them coming out of the Ark was stupid, but the best Dalek story is still 'Dalek' from the first series. I hope this new 2-parter is much more like that and not another Daleks everywhere end-of-the-world situation.

Surely more Art Deco than sharp "edgy"?

Its set to be a classic, good, intresting, creative episode, with the Daleks notching up another cunning plan which could occur the making of the weevils? Also the eppie is set in America, which is even better. Anyway It wil be a corker of a episode and I cannot bear the wait...

I wonder if it'll be a cross between "The Muppets Take Manhattan" and "Jason Takes Manhattan"?
Or perhaps we'll get a chorus line of Daleks singing a Leonard Cohen song or a Rogers and Hart one? Sorry - I'm now getting an image of a Dalek giving up on Universe domination in favour of fame & fortune on Broadway - "You're going out there a Dalek, but you've got to come back a star!" Not that I mind the current title, hoping it does exactly what it says on the tin. |

From wikipedia Quote:
The presence of the Daleks in this story was reported by the News of the World on November 12,[4] and confirmed by the BBC in late December.[1]
Wonder who tipped them off that "Daleks in Manhattan" would contain Daleks?

so long as it contains the line "Exterminate the Yanks" I'll be happy.
apologies to our American Friends but the Daleks are British and I don't want them selling out to America like every other dumbass British Act trys to. |

I've read part of the first post then realised this is a spoiler thread!
Why can't it be marked as such? I thought it was about the episode of "The Chase" |

Dalek Sec - Soon, the Dalek race shall be reborn. Soon, the Daleks will resume extermination of the lesser species and gain dominion! Soon, the Daleks shall continue their mission - to conquer and destroy!
The Doctor - But don't you understand?! You're powerless!!! You're nothing - virtually NOTHING! Temporal shifting severely drains your energy, you're just a gun without a bullet! And... [THE DOCTOR edges closer to Sec's eye] The Doctor - ...you're alone... Dalek Sec - ... You are incorrect... [THE DOCTOR looks worried at this statement. As the Doctor backs off, he is horrified to see three bronze Daleks emerge from the shadows around him, moving closer and closer] Dalek Sec - Dalek Thay, Dalek Jast, Dalek Kaan...EXTERMINATE! Other Daleks - EXTERMINATE THE DOCTOR! EXTERMINATE! THE DALEKS SHALL BE REBORN! EeeEeeEeeEeeEeeEeechhhhhhhh End Credits That was my dream cliffhanger for this episode

All the trailers have the Dalek just sitting there doing nothing, so I have a feeling the episode will have the Black Dalek dealt with quite early on and then the rest of the episodes will be a race to stop the production lines of the retro-Daleks......
I wonder what the state of the Daleks will be at the end of the two parter though.....I hear from here the contract will be up so to give them negociating power they may attempt to kill them off again, "We don't need them any more" tatic, rather than leave it open as previously... |

I want proper dalek, scary and strong. I want Them to be more terriefiying. I mean, just having there"eye" lit up red could give them a bit more of an edge.

I suppose they'd still have spoilt it for you when the episode aired and the title came up though Just like all the 70's Dalek stories where their name was in the titles and there was talk of a mysterious alien menace all through the 1st episode until the Daleks burst in just befor the cliffhanger - well who did we think it wa going to be

I think it may well depend on how the Dalek(s) are directed... Daleks are notoriously hard to direct and it can be very difficult to convey them as menacing. On the other hand, some directors can really do it... with good camera angles, lighting, etc., they can really be very menacing.
I just hope any "departure" or twist in the storyline isn't along the lines of "Dalek" - post-modern Daleks just don't work. |
