Hi,

I thought this might save someone else from searching on the internet for ages to find a solution.

Just thought i would post this information as i have been struggling to get my TomTom to connect to the internet through TomTom Home since i bough the unit at Christmas.

The problem was with Kerio Personal Firewall, you need to completely remove the software in order to get the TomTom Home software to connect.

Yes, TomTom Home uses a non standard port for connections to the Internet for updates. A lot of people at the company I work for have had this problem. If I ever find out which specific ports are affected, I will post them!

I have done alot of reading arund this subject and i have found a few common issues with TomTom Home (awful piece of software by the way!)

As far as i have read TomTom Home uses the standard internet HTTP over port 80.

It seems to have problems with proxy networks which is likely the problem on the company network, there also seems to be an issue with BT voyager routers with the MTU size which need to be changed to 1500.

I'm the new owner of a Tomtom One V2 (Europe), and I am also unable to log onto Tomtom Home for updates. (keep getting message 'Tomtom server is not available. Please try later) - have been trying for a week now!

I'm afraid I am a complete technophobe and I don't understand your comments:

'As far as i have read TomTom Home uses the standard internet HTTP over port 80.

Can you please explain, in simple terms, what I need to do in order to be able to log onto Tomtom?
Many thanks for any help.

Hi Hoggie,

Welcome to DS

There are two issues i have found with TomTom Home software.

1. Appears to have a problem with Kerio firewall also known as Sunbelt Kerio Personal Firewall 4. If you are using this then the only way to connect to TomTom Home is to uninstall Kerio. I advise to install another firewall in its place though, such as Zonealarm.

2. The other issue appears to be people who are using BT voyager modems (the thing that dials up to braodband internet-this should be near your PC somewhere.

I don't have voyager but have managed to get this from another forum #source here

Go into the BT Voyager Configuration Manager (http://voyager.home/main.html)
Click advanced - then local network - you will then need your username & password this will be set to admin for both unless you have set your own.
Check the local network configuration - check the MTU is set at the default setting of 1500. if so leave alone
Click internet - This shows the internet configuration on this page you will see MTU setting this also wants to be set at 1500 - ( MINE WAS 1400)
Press edit on this page leave all other settings as was just change the MTU to 1500 default once done you will need to re-boot the router.
Then bingo you should be able to connect to the tom tom server i hope.

The only other problem you might have is that your firewall is not letting TomTom Home communicate with the internet.

Hi Swellybro,

Thanks for the prompt, extensive reply. Unfortunately, I'm not sure if, or how, it might apply to me.

Let me give you details of my setup, and perhaps you would be kind enough to see if what you suggested applies to me:

Dell Dimension DM052
Pentium 4 3.20GHz
1.00 GB Ram
Windows XP
AOL Broadband with Thomson Speedtouch 530 modem
Belkin Wireless G router
AVG Free
AdAware SE personal
Spybot
C.Cleaner.

The only firewall I have is the Windows one.

Do you see anything there that may be causing the problem?

Many thanks for your time and help

This is a problem with TomTom software, though i do use kerio, i disabled it. I too got tomtom for christmas, and installed the CD software and it couldn't connect to the servers. If you install the software and dont install the latest version of the software though it does work. Its the latest version which is knackered.

Swelly bro, its the tomtom software thats the problem not the firewall. Especially when the post above doesn't even have it but has MS firewall.

Hoggies, install the version of the CD but dont install the updated version of TomTom website. Then it should work. Then they should fix their software and not hang when a single piece of traffic gets blocked.

Yes it is pretty poor software. I would however advise you Hoggy to download/purchase a proper firewall. MS windows one is very basic.

whoever, hey i have to say even though i disabled Kerio it still blocked the TomTom software this is not something i am very happy about, when you disable a firewall it should do just that i should not have to completely uninstall it in order to test whether it is that ,that is causing the problem.

I am guessing that the problem with AOL and the current version of TomTom home possibly lies with AOL's proxy server access.

Hoggy i would follow whoever, hey's instructions and try the version of TomTom Home off the CD that came with the TomTom. I would uninstall the existing TomTom Home sofware before you do this.

Thanks guys for all the tips and help.

I deleted TT Home which I installed from the CD supplied with the unit. (Version 1.2 build 502)

I then downloaded TT Home via the internet tonight. (Version 1.5 build 032)

That seems to have done the trick! - I'll let you know if it hasn't!

Thanks again, both of you.
