Recieved Toppy brand new on Wednesday but am finding that if left in standby for more than about an hour when turning it on again or if a recording is programmed all I get is C456 then E 13 on the LED display & tv screen. Putting it back in standby & back on again restores normal operation. There are no Taps loaded (its straight out of the box) and firmware is 5.12.25.
I have tried to update the firmware today but cannot get my PC or laptop to recognise the toppy having followed the instructions in the windows applications v1.0.4
Any suggestions?

To get your PC to recognise the Toppy you need the files - TfBulk.inf and TfBulk.sys

You should have downloaded them with Altair and TFDN_USB.

When you connect the Toppy your PC should ask for drivers for the new device - point to the folder that these 2 files are in and they should install. Your PC should then recognise the Toppy and you should be able to update.

Sorry as I have never seen a error on my Toppy cant say what E13 means but updating the firmware seems like a sensible idea. Am assuming you are trying to update to 5.12.88 which is much better than 5.12.25 especially in regard to EPG population.

TfBulk.inf and TfBulk.sys are both there but as soon as I plug in the USB cable the PC says `USB device not recognised`'one of the USB devices attached has malfunctioned & windows does not recognise it'. Am going to get a serial cable tomorow and try upgrading it with that. Registered last Wed. with toppy.org but still waiting for login details so unable to post there.

Surprised you got a brand new Toppy with 5.12.25 (was replaced last July) still no doubt quite possible and should not be a problem.
Anyway did not know you had to wait to register with Toppy.org.uk
Try again I would advise.

Toppy is a polar white one on offer at Turbosat via ebay sold as end of line. Must not hve been a good seller but I think it looks great.

If you bought it from Turbosat would advise ring them in morning. They are very helpful and as main dealers/importers know everything there is to know.

emailed turbosat on thursday about E13 problem but not had a reply. Didnt know about the USB problem until yesterday.

You shouldn't need to wait, unless your IP address appears to be outside the EU or Australia, in which case you have to be approved by the admins, or have your account summarily deleted (which will happen if you have dubious URLs in the profile, anything else that sets off our spammer radar)

You do need to receive the email of course, so you can click on the activation link; it will come from admin @ toppy.org.uk so make sure you don't block that. And if you use a spam system that sends us back a message with a link to click so that you can get our message with its link to click, we'll delete it and you'll never get to join while you use that sort of system.

I have also tried to register and never received the activation email so I find your answer very interesting.

However you seem to be saying that you cant register if you use certain email services which I find very odd.
How am I supposed to know this when it does not say anything on the site and how are we supposed to know whether our email service does this or not?

7 days on and still no conformation email here. I am in the process of transferring to talk talk from AOL so I'll wait untill Ive set up a new email address.
Toppy has now been updated and is now running Bastille day software. The USB problem was solved using a shorter better quality cable. We'll see in the morning wether it solves the dreaded E13.
I must say that the Toppy has been in heavy use during its first week, we have lost a few recodings through pilot error and the wake up problem (it hasnt been in standby since friday) but I havn't had a single crash needing a reboot, yet!!
I do worry about the heat generated though and suspect I may be changing a few electrolytic capacitors and fitting a fan soon after the warranty runs out.

You will know because when you try to register from an IP address that's in a non-approved country, as the last stage you'll see a message saying

"Your account has been created. However, this forum requires account activation by the administrator for users from the country we believe you to be in (based on your IP address), to help prevent spam posts. An e-mail has been sent to them and you will be informed if your account has been activated"

If you didn't see that, then your IP address doesn't appear to be from a non approved country, and so you should be able to activate your account automatically by clicking the link in the email.

To be absolutely clear, I'm not saying you can't register from certain email services (though some russian ones used by spammers are permanently barred, and you can't even get through registration if you use one of those).

All that happens is that, if the IP address (nothing to do with the email address) that you use when you register does not appear to be from the EU or Australia, then you'll see the message I quoted, and we'll have to approve your account for you.

If you didn't see that message, and you still haven't had a confirmation message - which should arrive within a couple of minutes, normally - then perhaps some filtering is blocking the address.

One cause could be that you're using a mail forwarding service, and you've given an address using registration that then forwards mail to somewhere else. Since we use SPF to prevent the Toppy.org.uk domain being used to send spam, forwarding messages from the site will likely make them disappear too.

If you still have difficulties, asking the admins via admin @ toppy.org.uk is the best solution, remembering to say which username you created, and which email address you used.
