Absolutely. Credit where credits due. TUTV are at least working on outstanding issues and are communicating with us. Sadly, there are not many other companies that would do this.

What? Are you mad? They are only communicating with people on this forum.... Occasionally...
  • They haven't been bending over backwards to answer their telephone.
  • They haven't put any updates or notices on their website (I wonder why not? that's the first place I'd go if I'd got a problem); and
  • They haven't sent out any letters to subscribers explaining what they are doing to sort out the problems.

Credit where credits due eh?

Yes, but why aren't they doing it on their own website - there is not one single mention of the service problems on their own site, no customer service notices, no mention of a forthcoming software download...

In fact, nothing.

Yet their website would be the first place most people would look for customer service information or technical help.

This week

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Well, we've had a bit of a week, as I'm sure you will have experienced.

We are still working hard on OAD2 - a new internal build has completed its first-pass test and has been submitted to our new field-triallists and our existing testers for in-home/region stress checking. The build looks good so far and brings much needed relief from many of the issues that you've spotted and raised.

However, the launch of the Setanta Sports channel required a number of key configuration changes by one of our broadcast suppliers and these have not gone to plan. The EPG/VoD schedule download in particular had to move to a new slot and this process failed. As a result, the boxes did not pick up new data - you will have noticed that the maximum number of days EPG data available in any box is currently 12. The VoD schedule in the box therefore does not match the playout schedule on air and some of the events have moved meaning that some programmes (like those from Nick, Living TV etc.) will be missed until the box picks up the new schedule. Unfortunately we can’t move the events back to match the box schedule as the channel they were on no longer exists and the bandwidth is occupied at that time by the new Setanta service. Channels such as Picturebox, TCM, Hallmark etc. are unaffected although there may be some strange listings data in some of them.

The new VoD data download time is 11:30, so you should be able to see a new 14 day data set after midday tomorrow (Saturday).. give it a few minutes to rebuild itself and take a look. We will all be in the lab and at the head end, monitoring the process tomorrow to check that it does go to plan.

I apologise for what has been a messy week VoD wise and sincerely hope that you'll all get the new schedule tomorrow.

Thanks to those of you who have registered for our new Beta test group - Kieron and I have been busy preparing your boxes this week and you should have them by tomorrow.. we look forward to hearing your observations.

Thank you also - as always - for your continued feedback, it is - as I have said before - invaluable. Kieron or I will post a full release note for OAD2 before it happens together with the planned download date which is currently booked for next Tuesday subject to testing and DTG approval.

Have a good weekend and, thanks again.

Can you go to the menus, select Help and private message me your smart card number please?

12/3/07 Simon Dore/Kieron Edwards - Confirmation of version 2.44 download

Fixes

· Disk Space Reduction
· Buffer Trim
· Early delete
· TalkSport/Low bitrate audio Problem
· Stuck video on impulse record
· TVX (MHEG CA services)
· Missing Muxes
· Timer Record
· 3 simultaneous recordings
· Genre Sorting
· Impulse Actual Data display

Improvements - still seen on a very small number of test units but the incidence is now very much less.

· Black video
· A long time in Standby
· Video skipping

General Improvements

· Series Link
· Child Lock
· Swap ‘0’ key
· EPG record ‘Back’ navigation
· Boot Sequence’ – green light to indicate the boot/disk check process
· Message Date – We have implemented a time/date stamp into the message function.
· Certification Logos
· Conflict handling – when a user recording is requested for an event that is also being recorded by the Anytime system both recordings will be made (one version in each library) unless a tuner is required for another event. In this case, the Anytime recording will be dropped.

This still leaves things to do (as ever). We’ve started working on the next build already and have an early iteration of subtitles running on the development platform. The next jobs are:

· Subtitles, subtitle recording and playback
· Ultra-low power standby*
· Placeholder handling
· Switching between CVBS and RGB produces a shift in timing (picture position)
· Anytime schedules sometimes don’t purge properly

-o0o-

So, once the box has downloaded the new code (a green light will appear during this process) the box needs to be put in and out of standby (if it’s already in standby – it’ll take immediately after you switch on). You should then see build 2.44 being shown in the HELP menus.

We also wanted to answer a few questions posted recently (apologies that it’s taken a while to respond but it’s getting quite hard to find the genuine questions and feedback on the forum now):

*Ultra-low power standby – this is not the same as standby no, it is a mode designed to minimise the environmental impact of the box. The idea is that when the disk and other essential systems are not required the power consumption of the unit can be reduced. This is a hard one to get right though and – as MrButt89 has pointed out – means that the box has to do some pretty clever “waking up” in anticipation of the next time all these things are needed. We didn’t get it right at the outset and that’s why it’s not in there. We would still like to introduce it though but obviously, won’t do so until we’re happy with it.

Returns – if you want to return your box please call Customer Services on: 08712 712 712. If this doesn’t work – drop us a line and we’ll make sure your request is dealt with.

Communication – we have had a comment that we should have communicated more clearly when we altered the EPG download time. I think – with hindsight – we could have dropped you a note to let you know. However, we didn’t anticipate any problems with it; it was only when we were forced to make a change at the last minute that the problems cropped up. Thanks for bearing with us and we’ll try to keep you more in the loop in future.

Best wishes and we hope you will enjoy using v2.44

So, I will restrict myself to one thread on each forum if you don't mind. This will allow me to see, hear, read your comments and questions, post information and should afford me some time to try to address the issues too.

I'll stick to this thread unless you suggest otherwise.

As a result of some excellent observations and questions this morning I offer the following additional info.

Download process:

The box will search all frequencies (not just those scanned) once every 60 minutes if a tuner is available. This 60 minute period is timed from the point at which the box was last powered up so all your boxes will be searching and taking downloads at different times.

After downloading, the box has to find a point at which it is safe to switch software versions. If it was in standby (and not recording anything) when the download started then it will reset automatically through a reboot. If it was 'active' the download is acquired but it will continue to run the older version until it is safe to switch.. in other words when you put it into standby. The "(current)" image is only swapped after this process has completed.

This morning we started the OAD playout at 11:00 - some of you will have taken the image immediately, others may have had to wait until 11:59 (assuming a tuner is free) until the image loaded.

The box holds two flash memory images (there was some confusion earlier about this being an image allocated to each tuner but this is not the case). The 'outgoing' version of code is stored in the box for two reasons; 1. so that if the image corrupts during download the box still has something to run and, 2. in case we have to roll back to the previous version for any reason. The "(current)" image - somewhat self-evidently - is the one the box is actually running.

Series link:

Each event in our EPG holds an associated and unique series ID and event ID. If you select a programme to record, the software looks for a series ID and if it finds one will offer the option to record anything else in the EPG has the same ID.

Those of you who received the download succesfully before 11:30 (the EPG/Anytime download time) will have had the new EPG processing routine which will correctly parse the data required for 'series link'.. those of you for whom the box did it the other way around will have to wait until tomorrow to see this working even though your current image version shows 2.44.

We don't use programme names as the ID key because there are often multiple instances of the same programmes on different channels not broadcast as part of the same series. Kieron also reminds me that the metadata is subject to interpretation and "Dr. Who" is sometimes rendered by the listings agencies as "Doctor Who" and a system with this as its ID key would miss one or the other.

Stream swap

The way the stream swap works is as follows: Pressing '0' cycles through all currently decoding streams.

So - to illustrate this - select BBC1 from the Guide, go to the Library, playback a recording and then press '0'. The output will cycle through the two streams. In order to see the three stream cycling, you have to tell the 'other' tuner to decode something. Go to Live TV, press 'record' to lock the tuner to the currently decoding stream, go to the Guide again and select another channel. Now press '0' and the output will cycle through the three streams.

Please note that if the box used the both tuners to display video all the time (so that you would see three streams at all times) it would tie up both tuners permanently unless the box was in standby and it wouldn't recieve downloads or software updates

'hope this helps, and that you enjoy v2.44

Best,

Simon

This ties up one tuner, the other is free to do as you wish - make a recording, tune to a channel. If you want to use both tuners during this time, the box will not acquire the last day of EPG data but will use the cached data it has available so - no real problem here because it still knows what's going on for the immediate future. However, if this happens for 14 (or 15) consecutive days then the box won't have any EPG data left and won't know what to do. So, I'd avoid doing it too often if I were you.

Additionally, we deliver the Anytime content during the night.. currently between 01:00 until 11:00 so - another tuner will be tied up during this time. Again, if you need
both tuners during this time, the content will not be acquired whilst both are tied up - please note partial recordings are not kept in the Anytime environment so you may miss more than the slot length the tuners were busy for.

Finally, the box does dip in and out of a couple of linear channels during the day (such as UK Gold and UK Style) to acquire content for the Anytime library. The timing of these recordings varies but has typically been around 21:00.. in "peak" time. This will also occupy a tuner leaving only one free. If you need both, the box will just miss that particular programme from its library.

It is worth saying that the exact times of these events will vary from time to time but I hope this helps you to plan your recordings more easily.

The EPG download will start in five minutes so I suggets you let that happen - for half an hour - and then the box will take the download afterwards.

After a download the box has to reset to switch the "current" version. If it was in standby when the download started then it will reset automatically. If not - it downloads 2.44 and then continues to run from 2.0 (the "current" bank) until you put the box into standby. When you then bring it out of standby the box resets itself.

What we don't do is rely on the name of the program as this causes issues (as Sky+ (I think it was) users found) with "Dr. Who" not being the same as "Doctor Who". I think they missed the last episode of the first series as a result.

Those of you who are getting the download AFTER 11:30 won't have series link as the EPG data has to be processed by 2.44 before it will be used.

Obviously tomorrow's EPG download will be processed and then you'll have series link.

I hope this ends the confusion on this.

Good question! The developers assure me you need 2.44 to process the EPG before you'll see series link. However - it *may* find the data from the cached EPG information off the disk.

Not that you should be rebooting that often!

2. It is possible the recording may have a glitch in it - having said that - we've made a load of improvements to the video drivers so you shouldn't see so many now. We do still have one glitch to fix - if the second tuner "fires up" whilst your watching TV then the first tuner glitches for about a second. We're working to fix this urgently as we're obviously not happy about this.

That will remove the possibility of the internal RF modulator causing any issues.
