Playstation 2's DVD and DVD Players
James D
06-03-2000
Anyone have any idea about the DVD player that will be in the new Sony Playstation (or that is already in it in Japan)?
Sony make the best DVD Players don't they? (please don't hang me for that!)
I am interested in buying the new PS and so is it worth waiting for that or buying a seperate DVD player now? (as I obvioulsy don't want 2!)
Also does anyone have any experience of the cheap players and if they think they are any good in comparison to the more expensive ones?
Thanks for your help!

Yes but you can't chip it do get Region Free DVD! http://www.techtronics.com is the place for all interested! You can get my player Sony DVP-S715 fully chipped for round about £450!!

But anyway, I cannot wait to get my hands on a playstation 2... the games will be amazing

Why can't it be chipped?
Also I have heard from some people (my local 'Game' shop) who have tested it said the graphics aren't as good as expected! I hope they are good as it looks ace!

Seems your local Game shop are just blagging for the sake of it.

Look around the web for first hand reviews of the console to get a proper impression of how good it is. Best place to go is to IGN's PlayStation 2 site.

According to the press today, the PS2 has some unspecified "technical problems" playing DVD's. Apparently, Sony were so desperate to get the product to market their QC has slipped.

The DVD playing capabilities of the Playstation II are set by the fact that it is done in software, not hardware like a standalone player. While this doesn't affect the quality the problems which have been experienced by some people were because the software (which is stored on the memory cards) was wrong.

Later memory cards fixed this problem. It can be made region free at the moment without a hardware mod, however this may well change for the UK version, as I said it is done in software so they can completely change the software by the UK release.

I have never really liked playing DVDs on a Playstation 2 due to the fact that no matter which picture setting I have on the Playstation 2, I can never, ever seem to get a widscreen type DVD to look exactly right on a widescreen TV!

as this is another 13 year old thread I am pleased it had much improved with the PS3.
In fact find DVDs really good on the Ps3 and Blu Rays and I don't bother with the remote as I find the joy pad is good enough for me.

Wow a nearly 13 year old thread!

PS2's must have been great for people wanting DVD players back then as they used to cost almost as much as the console for a standalone player, just think where we are now, it's the same with Blu-Ray playback on the PS3, it doesn't seem worth getting a standalone player.

I never found DVD playback to be very high quality with the PS2 though, in general the picture quality output of the whole console was a bit poor, you would also get greenscreen if the PS2 was wired up to the wrong SCART. When the PS3 came along, the AV output was massively improved and if you got a 60GB one, the PS2 games looked crispier and sharper, not because the graphics were being improved but because the picture output just somehow seemed better. To be honest I enjoyed PS2 games much more for the first time.
