Sony DVPS335 / 336 comments?
Orbitalzone

Has anyone got a Sony DVPS335 or 336 DVD player? and if so, what do you think about it?

It seems quite nice and reasonably well socketed, compared to same price Panasonic player. I don't need an inbuilt digital decoder as I'll use a dedicated AV amp.

I assume it's a sod to hack for multiregion, although I'm not worried about that really.

Thanks....

Sony's are pretty easy to chip but there are no "remote control" hacks. Good player (if you've got the cash though, go for the 735!!)

I've got the 535 myself and can't fault it.

I have just got one of the 336's, so I shall report anything of interest in the near future. Thanks for you replies.

Consider a Toshiba or Pioneer.

Hello, i recently bought a 336 and it is superb. it has coax and optical outputs on the rear and i've connected it to a Yamaha DSP-5 via optical cable for Dolby Digital. The two together cost £600 and well worth the money. I had the 336 modified for multiregion and that was worth the £40 in itself. All in all the 336 is a superb player. If you want DD built into the DVD then go for the 535. Thanks.

does the multiregion hack make it switchable between r1 and r2 or is it non region after the mod?

Did you fit the mod kit yourself? or is it only something for an engineer to do?

cheers

Just did a search for info on the 335/6 because that is the dvd I think I will buy.

How are you getting on with it? Are you wishing you got a multi region dvd player (I presume this just means you can buy cheaper dvds from USA and earlier than their release date in the UK). I fancied this player because it doesn't have a dd decoder in it so you are not paying the extra for it, as in the 535/6. Is this the only difference between the players? I am going to hook it up to my home cinema kit.

Thanks

well, to be honest, so far I've hardly used it! but so far I'm impressed, I'm not too concerned about region 1, the build quality is excellent, Audio CDs edit well onto MD via optical or coaxial output, it's very solid considering its the basic model in Sonys range. the 536 is the same excepet for the inbuilt DD decoder which I think a little pointless for my hifi which is non surround sound.

I also have dealt with Thomson DVD players. Made by Samsung, these are pretty good I think and look quite smart. The 4500 model is almost the same price as the Sony 336, it does have inbuilt DD decoder, which you may not want, but it has all the features the Sony has, plus can play mp3 on a CD-r disc, it can play CDRW audio discs too, It is easily hacked via the remote control for R1. They make a more basic model without DD inbuilt, i assume it's much the same but cheaper.
( I havent seen this model yet)

BUT back to the Sony 336, I'm happy with my choice. I know you can get cheapo models from Tesco for £130, but I know these seem good value, which they are, but they are cheap for reason, low build quality, less reliable, more bugs, etc... easily hacked though!

Appreciate your comments, I think I will get the 336. Before I found this forum I had been tempted by the cheaper dvd players but am glad I didn't buy one. As you say you get what you pay for.

Quoted a figure of £25 for an optical cable in a shop. Is this a fair price or are there places on the net that are cheaper? I was told there were two types, and I was not clear which type I needed. The Sony booklet for the home cinema kit just says optical cable to cope with these frequencies. I have not bought the dvd player yet.

Thanks.

£25 seems a lot really. An optical lead is only a fibre optic link, some leads have nice gold plugs that simply make no difference (unless someone call hoenstly tell me that a light signal is improved by using a fibre optic lead with gold plugs at the end? compared to a plastic ended plug)

£12-£15 seems normal where I've looked, where I work we sell them for £12. There are two types of optical lead- one has the same 'tos link' plug at each end for connecting a DVD to Dolby Digital Amp that has an optical input. the other optical lead is tos link at one end and mini jack type plug at the other : this is for personal minidisc and not liely to be what you need.

This DVD player also has a Coaxial digital output, it uses a signal RCA / phono plug. Only some Dolby Digital Amps have a coaxial input though. OPtical or Coaxial is a somethind asked here, which is better? well I think I'd say theres not much in it, optical or coaxial works fine with my equipment.(yes I've tried both)

Why not buy your DVD from a smaller hifi store? they might give you a free optical lead when you buy the DVD player! the online companies wont and i bet dixons wont, but your friendly local store might! its worth a try..

Found a cable in Currys for £12.99 so thanks for the tip that £25 was expensive otherwise I would have paid that.

I have bought the 336 and am delighted with it. The sound quality from my amp is incredible now with dolby digital.
