They were olympic champions in the days where sports people tended to just get honours not the full whack.

But nowadays they give them out to just about anybody. I thought having Dame Kelly Holmes on the last show particularly highlighted the ridiculousness of this - Jayne & Chris were at the top of their game for years and are still national treasures and great ambassadors for their sport, yet only have OBEs. She had one good year and the government 'jumped on the bandwagon' and made her a dame. Hmph.

Your wish is my command

Just set this up... >Clicky<

I hope you'll all sign and pass it round to everyone! Eventually we can hopefully get it sent off to someone and try to get some justice for Jayne and Chris

I agree. It used to be the case that the top honours were given to people in the 'autumn of their lives' as recognition of a great career. For example Mary Peters received an MBE for winning the Olympic Gold medal in 1972 and did not become a Dame until 2000 and that was awarded for her continued involvement in Athletics after retirement. Now its almost guaranteed along with a gold medal or world championship. Dame Kelly Holmes, Dame Tanni Grey-Thomson, Sir Clive Woodward, look at the state of English rugby and where is he now?

T & D received the MBE in 1981 after winning their first World Championship. There was no further award after winning Olympic Gold in 1984 but they were 'upgraded' to an OBE in 1999. I agree that a knighthood & dameship should have been awarded long ago but I dont know if it will happen now.

I agree with (almost) everything you say Drew, although about Tanni Grey-Thompson. She has won something like 11 (para)Olympic gold medals over several years and has done an enormous amount for her sport and opportunities for the disabled in sport in general so think her damehood was fully deserved. Agree about the other two though.

Going on past recievers of the knighthoods and damehoods (is that they way you say it?) they shoud definately get one, but in my opinion honours are given out to liberally at the moment.

Without a shadow of a doubt they deserve to be knighted. They are not only legends and icons, but outstanding ambassadors for this country and ice skating.

Dont start me about the honours system! I agree totally about how ridiculous Kelly Holmes being made a Dame is but it was done by a Labour Government chasing popularity. Shirley Robertson won her second gold medal at the Athens Olympics but she was awarded an OBE. Sailing is not high profile enough.

As well as double standards there is however a level of sexism in the manner of condescension towards women in the honours system. Knight Commander and Dame Commander are equivalent in stature however I dont think a male athlete achieving the same as Kelly Holmes would have received a Knighthood. If Amir Khan had won gold would he now be a Sir? It took Matthew Pinsent and Steve Redgrave 4 and 5 gold medals respectively before they were made knights.

The system should be scrapped for Sports and Entertainment stars beacause as a rule they are extremely well rewarded for what they achieve. But before doing this however, those that have achieved as much if not more than Dame Kelly should be honoured equally. Therefore arise Sir Christopher Dean, Dame Jayne Torvill, Sir Robin Cousins, Sir Daley Thompson, Sir Steve Ovett, Dame Ann Jones, Dame Virginia Wade, Dame Sally Gunnell, Dame Denis Lewis, Sir Linford Christie, Sir Allan Wells, Dame Mary Rand, Dame Anne Packer, Dame Tessa Sanderson and so on.

It doesn't take much to get the top honours nowadays - how else would we have Dame Kelly Holmes and endless MBEs for the England cricket team, who have failed ever since.

Torvill and Dean are much more deserving and have been consistent in their field of sport for decades. There are many other former sporting stars of the 70s and 80s and early 90s who deserve more recognition.
