Changes to subscription packages
Just been checking my download speeds as it seemed slow (on max pack 8mb)
with stb on 3mb download - 478kb upload with stb off 7mb download - 485kb upload Bearing in mind I use a wireless router the figures with the stb off look about right. What I did'nt expect was the stb to take half of my bandwidth!! Checked on HC website and they seem to be offering only two packs now - Big pack & Base pack with a choice of either 2mb or 4mb. Even going for the Big Pack/4mb combo with kids and music as extras it's about £10 cheaper than I'm paying now (been a customer for around 3 years) and I feel that HC are taking liberties by not adjusting my bill accordingly. Will have to get on to customer service tommorrow and see what they have to say, especially about the apparent reduction in service with no notification. M |

well it certainly seems bizarre
with everyone moving forward with faster speeds and HC not advertising there 8 meg pack something is definately going on. could this be due to the upcoming feb 11th tiscali rebrand. whatever im all ready to switch to tiscali's 8 meg and anytime calls for £21 a month which is £11 cheaper than HC. and as i have sky tv that side of it isnt a factor because i havent used the HC tv service for over a year |

Sory hoggster - you mention 7mb download - I assume that you mean that this is what you WERE getting.
You're now getting just 4Mb with the STB off? Can you confirm? |

When you say STB off you mean no TV on, yeah?
I've been having funny routing issues with HC recently. It looks like they might be using some Tiscali bandwidth now, which isn't as generously contended as HC was... |

Sorry about the confusion
With the tv on I get 3mb and with the tv off I get 7mb Last time I tested (approx 3 months ago) I was getting 5 to 6mb with the tv on and 7.5mb with the tv off. Haven't had a chance to contact customer services yet - will post as soon as I have more info M |

he is right! Max pack has been removed, I tested my line speed the other day it was WELL down! This explains a lot!
I cant complain however as I am on my 4 months free - but would be well p*ss*d if I was still paying for MAX and not getting it! |

ahh, that explains why my internet has been so slow recently. it's true. wtf is that about? how can they just remove it - it's hardly competitive compared to other services...

just a thought - when I switch my STB off I lose internet connection (its via wireless). Is that not right then? How do I switch TV off without the STB ?

press the HC button on the remote then the power button.
but i'm sure it's a global problem. on the phone to a guy now who is a bit clueless - like all of the new Tiscali tech/customer support people. i hate having to pay to call them it really winds me up, esp when they keep you on hold for so long because of their ineptitude. will report back with any findings... |

ok. first guy spoke to was pretty useless, kept trying to tell me that speed always goes up and down, blah de blah...
second guy was much more helpful - said that there's no reason i should get such a slow speed - syncing to exchange at around 7.5mb but only getting 4mb max - even when downloading directly from HC server. so, he's escalating things for me, which is nice... |

still doesnt explain the missing 8 meg service.
if homechoice removed that without informing customers that would be breach of contract as my contract is for the max pack. a pack seemingly no longer available and i would not only expect a refund and discount on my bill but also seek compensation for breach of contract. be interesting to see where this one leads |

ok - that second guy said it sounded like a problem in the exchange. and lo and behold suddenly an hour or two ago things speeded up again. now it could just be contention or whatever, but that's a whole two and a bit meg extra i've got now. that's more like it. good stuff. (until tomorrow)
![]() CS said today that they couldn't explain why 8mb was missing on the website, but that they definitely still sold it. hmm... |

Hmmmmm
Speed had dropped to 2.8m this morning so got on to customer service and now it's shot up to 4.75mbs with tv on and 7mbs with tv off - better, but still not what it was especially with tv on.
Also asked about the Max Pack dissapearing from the web site and was told - "We've had a lot of calls about that but it still exists and you're still on it" So it seems that it could just be a cock-up by their web designer or perhaps it's a sign of things to come, only time will tell M |

Well it seems to be that HC are going backwards!
After losing Replay on ITV it now appears that FX is no longer on board with "Take Two" as their series brotherhood has been removed! Also the replay on FX is to say pathetic! Why are HC going backwards?! Not only are they not adding new content but they are now losing it! As Virgin get on board with 4OD, HC seems to be losing all its bleeding contracts! As BT vision sign a deal with Setanta, HC is smply going down the pan! PVR and more channels, I stay! No PVR no new channels, I get SKY + at first opportunity!!!!!!!! |

Well.... we've only got (roughly) a week to wait until the roll-out of the tiscali service and IMHO it needs to be a viable alternative to cable or satellite in terms of choice, content and services offered. I believe that HC are the only 'digital' provider that dosen't carry the red button interactive services (apalling when you can go to your local supermarket and buy a £20 DTT box that does carry it), and now it seems as if the broadband is taking a hit. Compared to satellite or cable it just dosen't have enough to tempt people.
HC found a niche in london due to the high number of rental properties (most leases do not allow a dish) and the limited availability of space to install new cable ducting in the streets. Agreed there will be a percentage of the national population in the same situation but will that be enough to make a profit, and if they don't how long is the service likely to last. M |

Just got my newsletter!
SHOCKING SHOCKING SHOCKING! Thats all I have to say about the poor effort that HC have offered for C1 and VOD content in Feb! Nothing original, nothing exciting! So bored of this now! Bored of HC being the same bland weak attempt at a competitive Digital TV provider! One week till decision time, do I stay or do I go???? |

Well, I've got an NTL install (or indeed Virgin Media) booked for 10th Feb. Sick of waiting for HC to get their act together. Virgin Media has a PVR, loads of on demand and channels like Bravo and Sky One. It's a sinking ship and I'm jumping....

just received this email from HC
The homechoice MAX pack has been removed recently, those who are still subscribers to this pack such as yourself (would need your account number for confirmation) will still be paying and receiving the MAX pack service. New customers however will not be offered the MAX pack option, as our big pack has all features of the MAX pack, we are now offering MAXPACK VMX and Kids channels as optional extras, up to the same price as the MAX pack. well to me that tells me nothing as to whats going on with the 8 meg service which is still not listed its just about the tv side of things.. something def going on here |

It sounds like they are going to drop the 'up to 8mbit' terminology which has been ruled misleading advertising when other ISP's use it. If they call it a 4Mbit service (even when using the TV) then users like me who can receive the practical maximum of 7.2Mbit (without TV) will be happy and far more customers will receive the advertised speed with TV.
With this, switching off the TV is a bonus to benifit the customer, not a requirement. Last edited by Peter We : 05-02-2007 at 11:05. |

I called customer care and they said that max speed had been removed by mistake, that it was just the max pack that was meant to be removed and that max speed will be going back on the web shortly
