Vidoe IPods - any good for movie watching

I currently use a PSP to watch movies that I have recorded using my DVD recorder and transferred them with video 9, as my PSP can sometime be a bit bulky I want to possibly do the same thing with an video IPod is just for watching movies nothing else.

What I want to know is does anyone have a video IPod and use it for watching movies and if so are they any good - just some general chit-chat would be appreciated ie quality of picture etc Many thanks in advance

A video iPod is not a dedicated video device despite the name. It is a music machine that happens to have some video-playing capability. The Microsoft Zune is the same though it does have a bigger screen but same resolution as ipod. The creative zen vision is highly rated for its video format compatibility and generally goodness compared to both the zune and the ipod.

true video playing devices are much bigger though like the archos and cowon PMPs and compared to these your PSP is adequate and has a decent screen so perhaps the bigger devices that are actually designed around video are out of the picture.

The video ipod is good but only really for the reasons the previous ipods were good. You would be better off with one of the creative devices.

The Zen Vision M, has a far superior screen resolution that the iPod, 262,000 colours compared to the pathetic 65,000 offered by the iPod. You get about 5 hours of video playback as well. If you want a player for video & MP3 it has to be the Zen M. it kicks the snot out of the video iPod.

^^^ agreed.

Of the smaller devices, I'd take the Vision:M over an iPod every time.

I use my video ipod for watching TV programmes on the train when I'm commuting & also for punting out stuff to our 42" tv in the lounge - I always thought that I'd hate the small screen when watching stuff when commuting but it does the job fine for me, even when we watch stuff on the TV via the ipod the picture can sometimes be a bit blocky but it perfectly watchable also I don't really want to carry anything much bigger than an ipod around with me

Ummm the Zen M is not exactly huge compared to the video iPod. There are only a mm in it.

It's not so much the screens that differentiate the Vision:M and iPod Video for me, it's the range of video formats they can handle.

The iPod is waaaaaay to restrictive here. The Vision:M handles a far greater and more useful set of video formats.

If anything, it does probably also have a slightly better screen but theres not a lot in it. Both are perfectly watchable on their own screens. Haven't seen a Vision:M hooked up to a big TV but have seen an iPod running this way and on a big screen it looks about as good as something played at that resolution is likely to ..... average.

I have a Zen Vision M and video playback is great on it. I play Xvids and Divx no problem. Only 1 tv series has it asked to convert to another format, which the bundled software can do.

Also you can play out to a TV, but you have to buy a specific cable, which is slightly annoying. Saying that, I bought the cable and it works a treat.

Love watching Mythbusters and South Park on the train into work!

I have a creative zen vision M and while I would be happy watching half an hour or so of material, not sure I could watch a full movie on such a small screen. Zen vision M is reputed to be better than Ipod for Video playback so not sure you would enjoy watching a movie on your ipod

I've made 'high res' 640x480 videos for my ipod that i can just play through my tv. Its not hdtv, so the video doesn't look too bad, better than vhs but not as good as dvd. I wouldn't watch a whole film on my ipod in one go. The screen is small and not really ideal for looking at for long periods of time.

If you want to get a video player, get one of those archos things with the huge screen.
