On an unrelated analogue matter...
Anyone noticed that terrestrial analogue TV no longer broadcasts a widescreen picture?
I noticed about 2 years ago in London but not in wales and more recently on a visit to wales noticed that widescreen had disappeared...
The Teletext Services have been watered down so thin that they are threadbare on BBC2 as well...

ATT has never broadcast in widescreen, other than for films and when there's a fault.

Most programmes are broadcast as 14:9 in a 4:3 frame.

Sudbury currently transmits all 6 DTT multiplexes on severely reduced power (to minimise interference to the 5 co-located analogue transmitters). As you will have seen from that link MC2 posted above, the highest is currently radiating at 8.1kW and the average is about 5kW.

At DSO, the transmit power will be increased to 100kW - approximately 19 times more powerful.

It should be possible for you to replace your aerial with a piece of wet string when DSO occurs.

I have phoned around aerial installers to find out costs of replacing my aerial with a new wideband digital one, they keep saying the cable needs to be changed as well, how important is this? i do get a lot of channels anyway but missing is the weak itv and channel 4 from the sudbury tx

Not every one will be fully DAB'd up
It is available only from the Selkirk Transmitter serving the Central Borders
Which town do you live in?

with a secam TV and a freeview box that is compatible I guess he can watch both!

Sécam? Mais non! The colour system for the UK "Freeview" digital service is not PAL and the French "TNT" system is not Sécam! Yes they are for the, now being phased out analogue services, but not so in the new digital era. In fact after DSO in both countries each system will be much more similar to each other than they were on analogue which we all know are completely different (I/Pal et L'Sécam)

V'là!

Ofcom has published maps showing the locations of the television transmitters which will be converted to digital operation as part of the digital switchover programme. Click Here.

Unless the cable is damaged and/or has water penetration then changing it will make little difference; in my view re-terminating and putting good quality plugs and sockets on make a bigger difference. Of course, peace of mind for a complete replacement might pay dividends - don't let them con you into a huge cost - a 100m drum of excellent quality cable costs £35 - 35p a metre.

Good luck

You might be better off with a group E aerial rather than a wideband, both now and after DSO.

Providing they're not ripping you off, new cable isn't all that expensive and is usually money well spent.

Digital UK have announced that Beacon Hill will switch off analogue on 8 April 2009, followed by other SW transmitters (Stockland Hill 6 May).

I will swing my Mendip (all MUXes) aerial to Stockland Hill at that time.

I can actually set the amplified log-periodic so it gets both - but currently Stockland Hill (~60miles) is very hit and miss - and when it is a hit - Caradon Hill kills it at ~110 miles range!

PS I have also had digital from Huntshaw Cross but never from Beacon Hill.

Has anyone worked out when Stockland Hill will get the HD MUX operational?

The HD mux should appear on all DSO'd transmitters at the same time as Winter Hill gets converted. Present estimate late 2009 unless DVB-T2 doesn't actually work.

July 2009 for us, so that'll be three years or more for some people without TV

then the signal comes from winter Hill.
its the main transmitter.
None of the Relays carry the digital signal on, except after the switchover.
