Sudbury currently transmits all 6 DTT multiplexes on severely reduced power (to minimise interference to the 5 co-located analogue transmitters). As you will have seen from that link MC2 posted above, the highest is currently radiating at 8.1kW and the average is about 5kW.

At DSO, the transmit power will be increased to 100kW - approximately 19 times more powerful.

It should be possible for you to replace your aerial with a piece of wet string when DSO occurs.
There`s a bit more to it than just lower power.....

The BBC has begun DVB-T2 test transmissions from the Guildford transmitter southwest of London, in preparation for HD on Freeview. The transmission facilities are provided by National Grid Wireless and Arqiva as part of their support for the DVB standardisation process and the UK project for the launch of DVB-T2 services. More

The captions are starting in Border on the 6th of May.
http://www.dtg.org.uk/news/news.php?id=2981
Has anyone seen any sign of these captions yet?
I live in Greenlaw (near Duns) and have yet to see any on screen captions - though admitedly I don't tend to watch analogue much - but I can't seem to find any threads / posts on here from anyone who has done a screen capture or even mentioned seeing them.

We have less than 3 months to go - you would think we would have seen / heard something by now wouldn't you?

Andy

Andy You puzzle me, firstly you have your location as NE England and say you live in Greenlaw (How's your town hall?) an area I know very well.
Right on to transmittery things.
The captions are on analogue only and they are there, or were a couple of months ago last time I looked.
Your digital reception should not be affected but after switch off but should improve when they up the power on the Mux's.

Hi,
Sorry to confuse you - I used to live in NE England and receive from Billsdale but I moved to the Borders in 2006 and haven't got round to updating the bit at the side yet! Sorry about that.

The town hall is as it was before - with a large hole in the roof.

I was just surprised that if the captions have been on analogue - no one has posted any pics of them - and lets face it with this forum - even if the time on ceefax is wrong by a few seconds someone will notice and post a picture!

I am more than aware of what changes DSO will bring - gonna be a pain if I am planning on recording something on the 6th November!

-- Does anyone know yet - HOW exactly they are going about it - is the plan still to withdraw Analogue BBC2 on 6th November - and replace it with a digital MUX of the 5 main channels? Up-to-date information on the internet is not very easy to find.

Thanks

I am assuming you get your signals From Selkirk (home of Border ITV), If so, BBC-2 goes off first then the rest will be switched off on the 6th.
If however you get your signals from Chatton (home of Tyne Tees ITV),You'll be doing well if you can as well as Selkirk you'll have to wait till Aug-2012

I'm not sure if you've seen this before but if you have it is worth repeating.

Feb 17th 2009 I believe.

It will be interesting to see if the switch actually works in one hit.

Its funny, I spend my time almost 50/50 between the UK and the US. There is no hype over digital switchover as there is in the UK.
I have seen no advertisements or heard it mentioned until Radio Ruderham said it on here! But then in the USA I seldom watch TV anyway!
The USA uses a greater range of frequencies than the UK, spread over the VHF and UHF band and towns, cities, and places across the country tend to be far apart. They therefore do not face the problems we have in the UK in that the restricted frequencies available and the overlapping regions where we use relays cause a problem of signal clashing.
The USA have very few relay transmitters, the attitude is "if you cant get it - you cant get it!".
The UK uses one transmitter in a region that carries all the stations (with exception of Crystal Palace and Croydon channel 5) whereas the USA may have an area where each station broadcasts from their own transmitter. Some areas you may need to receive signal from 10 places and the reach of the transmissions varies so at one end of a street they may get 10 channels and the other end only 6!
It makes for some very interesting antennas - although building codes will be brought in after the switchover that will require householders to remove redundant equipment from rooftops.

Apologies if this has been answered elsewhere, but most of the Freeview channels from Stornoway are out. Is this due to switch-over operations? Fed up with a diet of pixelated Obama...

Reference the post above from me - all is well I believe - neighbour has been in back garden and stressed cable from antenna to signal amplifier.

Sorry.
