Panasonic DMR-HS2 - won't dub!

Purchased this machine some years ago, and it’s given pretty good service, (apart from having to change the hard disc once) although I’ve rarely used the dubbing facility. Tried to today, only to be told I’ve inserted a ‘non-recordable disc’. (Same make as I’ve used before, purchased with the machine). So I tried a couple of others with the same result. Any suggestions, please? Another problem that’s recently occurred is the remote is only partially working – for example, I can change from SP to LP etc, but can’t change the input from AV1 – 2 etc. (but can on the machine)

Sorry can’t help with the dubbing. The remote is a bit flimsy, mine started to give trouble after three years or so. You can get a new one (EUR7615KEO) from Shop.Panasonic.co.uk for £16.63 + £3.00 p&p

Thanks, Mike - that's helpful, but will hold off buying a new remote until I sort the main problem.

Perhaps the units lenses need cleaning. According to the manual P86, dust and dirt may adhere to the units lenses after a while, possibly making it impossible to record or play discs. You can buy lens cleaners, but to be honest I have never used one myself.

Just wondered, you say this is a dubbing problem, but have you tried recording directly to a dvd? Also, does it play ok? It sounds from your original post as if the drive has not been used that much. The only other suggestion I can think of is perhaps the discs themselves are causing a problem, you can get dvd-r discs cheaply these days, even from Pound shops, it might be worth just trying another brand. At least this would eliminate the discs themselves as being the problem. Is it possible the ones you are using have become dirty/dusty?

Hope the cleaner fixes this for you, otherwise you may be looking at a professional repair unfortunately. At least you can use the cleaner on future machines also.

OK - problem sorted! Cleaning Kit came yesterday - it took two or three 'cleans' but I finally managed to transfer 90mins of home movies from tape via the HDD to a DVD.
As it was playing DVDs perfectly satisfactorily, I didn't think a dirty lens would be the problem
Thanks for your help, Jinky - might be worth buying a new remote now (thanks for the info on that, Mike), although the analogue TV signal here is so crap, I rarely use the tuner, preferring to route the signal from Sky or Freeview through AV1 on the DMR-HS2. Probably time to upgrade and buy a new HDD/DVD recorder with twin digital tuner (although looking around I could only find machines with a single tuner).

You should route your Sky/Freeview signal into AV2 (not AV1) as this can accommodate an RGB signal, which i dont think AV1 can do. AV1 is usually the output scart which should be set to RGB and plugged into your TVs RGB socket (usually AV1).

You may find you get a better picture this way. Also, remember to set Sky and freeview to output RGB.

Hi Salisburyman, you won't find a dvd recorder with twin tuners, much is the shame because looking through these threads there is a demand for them, especialy if you have an all in one which can record to hdd /dvd and video at the same time like the analougue 3in1.
There are plenty of twin tuner pvr's around but that isn't what you'r after.

Thanks for that Scorpio - I'll try it.
Yes, dmp, I do have a FVRT100 Digifusion pvr with twin tuner (and problems, but that's another story); I guess it won't be long before someone comes out with an all singing all dancing machine. Just had a new aerial fitted, so at least the analogue signal is just about watchable.
