Tripod for digital camera - help please!
Victoria Sponge

Hi.

I have been using digital cameras for ages and now I have decided I need a tripod. I know nothing about tripods. How does the camera get attached to the tripod? is it via a clamp-type fitting? Are tripods universal, i.e. can they hold any size/brand of camera?

Please help.

I picked one up in Dixons a couple of years ago for £20 that fits my Sony videocamera, my Olympus miu600, Nikon Coolpix and my OHs Fuji FinePix. I think it's a universal screw size that fits into the screw hole on the base of most cameras.

I had a feeling that they use a screw-in method. Trouble is, on my camera there is no screw fitting at the bottom! Is your OH's camera this one: http://www.fujifilm.co.uk/digital/cameras/z3/ ? 'Cos that's the one that I have.

No. OH's camera is:

which has the base screw fitting. I don't know of any other types of tripod but I'm no expert, to be honest. I hope you find one .

I just found this:

which claims that the tripod screw fitting is on the Picture Cradle/camera dock (CP-FXZ3) that comes with the camera. Hope this helps.

I looked at your model, a while back, and tripod thing put me off, though I think the workaround is, using the charging cradle as a type of homemade tripod or theres a fitting underneath the cradle for a tripod, can not remember which is which. Though it means carting a cradle around with you.

Midiboy you're an absolute star! I read your link last night and I have just checked the cradle thingy and there it is - the screw hole! I would never have thought it, and I am one of those stubborn people who never reads instruction manuals!

Thank you lots.

Unfortunately there were a few factors which I missed off my tick-chart when picking a camera. One of them was indeed the tripod connection (though I just ASSUMED that all cameras would have the screw-hole at the bottom, as my last camera did), and also the usb connectivity. I never considered that this camera wouldn't have a usb port on it, and can only connect to pc through the port on the cradle.

Still, I suppose you can't have everything, and the drwabacks above are the price I paid for having such a small and sleek bargain.
