Looks like they have set a date of March 1st for the launch.

From April Tiscali will make the service available outside of London, initially to Newcastle, Birmingham and Edinburgh.

In June, Leeds, Sheffield and Liverpool and by the end of the year, reaching 50% of Tiscali's LLU network (5m homes).

The Big news being "The company will also launch a new set top box in July 2007 that will include a 160Gb HD-ready PVR"

So looks like we will get our PVR, although a bit later than we would of wanted. No news on new channels, content etc. The only details on pricing being that the base TV pack will be free to their existing customers who currently pay £14.99 pm for 2Mb.

All looks promising, I just hope they up the content.

hi all 2 Questions

1) as a HC viewer will we automaticly become Tiscali TV from the 1st March???

2) see below
Tiscali TV's basic package will cost £14.99 and will bundle broadband with a basic TV package of 30 channels. Sky One will not be available in the basic pack, but a catch-up TV service for BBC channels and a further 100 hours of on-demand programming including US imports will be included.

http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/digitalt...h-march-1.html

does this mean that Sky One will eb available in other packs then??????

Yes - that caught my eye too. I haven't seen mention of Sky One or the content of any other packs in any other sources so I wouldn't build up my hopes just yet...

£14.99 a month might be enough to keep me subscribing after I move house, though - even if I just have the Base Pack and use Satellite for my other channels...

This doesn't look like they're expanding the channel line up in any way - that figure adds up to roughly what we've got now, doesn't it?

What it looks like we're getting is a better value package (assuming these aren't "for the first 3 months" prices) rather than more features - though the PVR in the summer sounds good - must be a chargeable add on though, surely.

Edit - Just saw this: http://business.guardian.co.uk/story/0,,2005873,00.html
In fact, there is no obligation on Sky to make its basic channels - including Sky One - available to rivals. Tiscali, for instance, is relaunching the Homechoice service next month as Tiscali TV without the channel. In 2002 the Office of Fair Trading found that Sky was dominant in the supply of premium channels - such as its Sky Sports channels - so these have to be made available to rivals. But there is no similar ruling on its basic channels.

i'm very lucky and have just bought a house in Uxbridge, that already has a Sky + dish on the rear of the property!

I will be able to leave HC now and get SKY +

Have called Sky already and a base pack with Sky including Sky talk and 2mg BB will cost me £24.99 p/m!

Very happy!

Its a shame that HC came in so late with their own PVR

I hope this is wrong: http://www.thinkbroadband.com/news/2...iscali-tv.html
Tiscali is managing network capacity by restricting people to 100 hours of video content over the broadband connection on the basic products, or allowing you to upgrade to 1000 hours of on-demand content and another 27 channels for £10 more per month.

What's the deal with that kind of PVR - can you play it back and record into a DVD recorder?

The 1000 hours upgrade is quite interesting. 31 days x 24 hours = 744 hours. Does that mean tiscali are going to give us an extra 10.66 days a month? Sounds like an excellent deal. I've always said that there weren't enough hours in the day to get everything done

Great. Goodbye.

No its a Personal Video Recorder. It records programs to an inbuilt Hard Disk Drive.

Hmm, what about recording 2 channels at once, perfectly feasible with ADSL2+ and SD TV, possibly HDTV as well.

At the very least they'd have to offer the ability to watch one channel while recording another - so this would already require 2 streams.

Watching one while recording 2 is another matter entirely..

Yes I know, but can you get the programs recorded on the hard disk out into a DVDR.

Maybe if you take the video output from the PVR and send it to a DVDR... presuming they don't have any content protection on...

Questions I still want to know:

Is there any way of archiving recorded programmes from the PVR?

Will the PVR be a free upgrade for existing customers?

How much will the HD homechoice cost vs standard digital one?

There has been no mention in any reports of a hi def service. Just a hi def capable box, which could just be future proofing their next gen box for when they finally upgrade to adsl2 and are actually able to offer a hi def service.

Hmmmm,

I'm not sure what to do... I'm going to leave Tiscali, and was Sky bound! But now,

http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/digitalt...5-a-month.html

This offer of £85 p/m seems to good to miss!

Including all calls, all broadband (10Mg) a brand new PVR, all sky sports/movie channels!

The comp has seriously hotted up!!!

Tiscali has some serious work to do! This is just no longer competitive!

I think i may be heading to a Virgin service! That offers me everything I need at a super price!

Another report at http://www.ispreview.co.uk/cgi-bin/n...ZVFVZuVHMqzvwn - basically the same as previous but with 2 slight nuances

1) £14.99 for TV & Broadband - £19.99 to include weekend phone calls as well (So they've separated the phone package out to make the deal look better?)

2) "Unfortunately the popular SkyOne channel will not be carried and may soon be pulled from 'Virgin Media' as well, depending on negotiations."

Not wanting to start an argument here so i'll keep this short!

I have been posting on this board for some time and have been a HC user for well over 2 yrs now!

I am in a position to possibly leave and am here as everyone else is to discuss, debate and get advice from others!

I have considered Virgin media, I am considering Sky, I may stay with Tiscali??? What I therefore post on here is for people to maybe say stuff like "oh no go with Sky" "Oh no stay clear of Virgin media that is too much money"

Not make silly comments topwards me, and especially considering you dont know me from adam!

Anyway back to the discussions! My above comment I think may be too much money Sky currently offer their 6 mixes + broadband and phone for £26 p/m

My point was that Tiscali will have to keep prices to a minimum now because both Virgin and Sky are realising there is a lot of compotition now with BT and Freeview and prices are being driven down!

Ok, I'll shut up, as long as you stay constructive.

Tiscali do seem to generally aim for the cheapest price. I agree that all this new competition will make things much more interesting, although I want HD more than lower prices.

Sky package requires a BT line, so it's £37

Virgin offers tv/vod, phone line & unlimited broadband for £30

Plus their new free VOD TV channel launching 20th Feb.

http://phx.corporate-ir.net/phoenix....628&highlight=

Virgin Media is making 20 February a red-letter day for TV fans, with the launch of Virgin Central, a revolutionary new kind of television channel.

Virgin Central will herald a new way to watch telly, combining the simplicity of a traditional channel with the choice and control of next generation TV-on-demand technology.

The channel will be free and host a showcase of blockbuster entertainment around the clock, selected from the best of the company's TV-on-demand service. By pressing one button and using a simple on-screen guide, viewers will have instant access to different episodes of the show they select. They can then stop, rewind and pause - just like using a DVD player.

Major series expected on the service over the coming months include The OC, Nip/Tuck, West Wing, Little Britain; Grey's Anatomy, Alias, Criminal Minds, CSI: Crime Scene Investigation and CSI: Miami.
