Rewritten information about upgrading the PVR 80

Updating the firmware/software on the Digihome PVR 80

I have expanded, and tried to make the procedure previously written easier to understand for those new to this type of upgrade.

Please note that this update is done at your own risk. You could finish with an expensive brick if things go wrong.

The serial cable used to connect the box to the computer is a 'straight-through' 9-pin cable (pin 2 to pin 2, pin 3 to pin 3 etc. with a male connector on one end, and a female connector on the other. The end with the pins may have fixing screws or threaded bushes which you will need to remove to prevent them catching on the PVR80 socket.

With the PVR disconnected from the mains, connect the serial cable between the PC and the PVR80.

Open HyperTerminal on the PC from ‘Start’ ‘All Programs’ ‘Accessories’ ‘Communications’ . Type a name to use for the connection, (like Digihome PVR), and choose an icon, or accept the default icon, then click 'OK'

Select 'COM1' if it isn't already selected. Type your area code if requested. Click 'OK'

Select Bits per second: 115200 and Flow control: None. Click 'Apply'. Click 'OK'

Plug in the PVR80, and HyperTerminal should respond with some text on the computer monitor, I then wait for the disk check to complete on the PVR box.

Select 'Transfer' -> 'Send File..' from the HyperTerminal menu.

Use the 'Browse' button to navigate to where you saved the .bin file.

Select '1K xmodem' as the protocol type and click 'Send'.

A grey box will appear but there will be no activity. Unplug the PVR80 from the mains, wait 5 seconds and plug it back into the mains....
... The grey box should then show activity. Packets transferred and a progress bar.

When the grey box disappears after the file has been transferred, wait for the main HyperTerminal screen to display the text again, (after about 30 seconds). The box should then reset and do another disk check, wait for disk check to complete.

Now you can shut down HyperTerminal and disconnect the PVR, it will ask for confirmation to end the connection (yes) and ask if you want to save the connection settings, choose a name for this if you do, or select no.

Before using the box with the TV, unplug it.

Once the box is reconnected to the TV, you can check the software version by going to the configuration menu. It should now read v.xx where xx is whatever version has been used

If any problems are encountered after upgrading, pressing and holding in the ‘OK’ button on the box (not on the remote) whilst powering up the box will enable the disk to be reformatted and the box to be reset.

Hi.

If you are having problems, please PM me, and I will let you have Vestels own little document to updateing their boxes. It is important to follow their method for successful downloading.

If I can, I will also include the last T810 Firmware update (5.7).

Regards,

Tim Peel.

You may have missed that you replied to a post from Nutty Timbo dated Oct 2007 and he has not posted on this forum since Jan 2008. I saw your post in another thread. I doubt your problems are related to the Selkirk problem as you live in Salisbury. Are you sure your problem as described in the other thread are software related? Can you playback existing recordings if you have any and access other functions on the unit?

Although user TheSaint5 may simply have experienced hardware failure I am not sure we can rule out the 8K signal change outside of the Selkirk transmitter area. According to BBC Watchdog (several weeks ago), 250,000 Freeview viewing boxes recently lost all channels - and (different - not 8K) changes to the broadcast signal were blamed...

http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/watchdog/...g_their_o.html

Older boxes: Frustrated, Susannah searched Freeview's website for an explanation, and did find a tiny one. It was hidden away, but made clear her problem was widespread. "I eventually found a statement that said Freeview was changing part of the transmission and this might break some of the older boxes. I was just really annoyed and I was really upset and worried that people who weren't as technically literate as me would never have found that information."

Yes, point taken. I had only considered the 8K issue. I guess if TheSaint5 posted more detail of the symptoms on his unit it would help to diagnose the cause.

Yeah I'm not sure Colin's problems are related to 8K, we cant point the finger at Digital UK everytime a PVR80 dies.

This looks most likely.

It was the introduction (nationwide) of the July/August split-NIT signal change which was featured by Watchdog.

TheSaint5's PVR80 firmware v5.6 works OK with split-NIT signals; I know this because I had both v5.6 and split-NIT signals, before I (successfully) "grabbed" v5.7 last night!
