RF Out to TV?
elevate

Hi there,
Just got a refurbished 160gb digihome pvr from eBay. I'm trying to hook it up to an older TV with no scart connection. So, I have the aerial going into the back of the PVR 'rf in' and an RF lead going to my tv's RF in (from the PVR's 'rf out'). But when scanning for the PVR's picture it cannot be found!

Please don't tell me that you 'have' to use a scart connection with these? Is the RF in - out just a signal passthrough so the TV can access the signal from the aerial?

Any help/tips/advice greatly appreciated!! Cheers

No idea on that make or model, doesn't the instruction book explain it?, even if it does it may require enabling first?. My Humax 8000 has RF output, and works fine via RF.

How old is your TV not to have a SCART?.

thanks for your reply!

The handbook (which is quite poor in my opinion) does seem to suggest that it is possible, I was thinking that perhaps as it is a refurbished model that the settings weren't restored to factory defaults?

Would anyone know if there is a reset function/button that does not require you to see the PVR's user interface?

Cheers

p.s. My TV is an ancient 14" portable - I've recently moved and have yet to acquire a brand spanking new 32" lcd.....perhaps in a few paycheques time!

Yes, you got it in one. Like most set-top boxes, Digihomes don't have an analogue RF modulator. Connect it via an old VHS machine, using its modulator, if you've got one. Some machines, such as the Humax PVR-9200T, do have modulators.

Ok, so if I connect the RF out (from the PVR) to the RF in on a VCR and then connect the VCR to the TV it should be ok?

Maplins do a Scart to RF modulator at around £30. Not the cheapest solution, especially if you already have an old VCR, but it does provide an elegant solution.

I think he means connect the PVR via scart to a VHS recorder then connect the VHS to the TV as per normal. Then you would set you VHS to display what is coming in via the SCART socket. Then turn your TV to the channel you usually use to watch your VHS and voila! You should be seeing whats on the PVR.

If your VHS doesn't have SCART then you'll need one of these:

No, we know that there's no RF PVR output.

That's exactly what I mean.

Great! Thank you all so much for your rapid responses! I do have an old vcr knocking about so I will endeavour to try that solution. Will update with my progress later this evening. Cheers

No. You connect the PVR's SCART to the VCR's Input SCART (if it has two make sure the one you use really is an Input - not uncommon for one to be OUTPUT only!). Select the appropriate input on the VCR (may call it AUX, AV, AU Ext, E Line or L plus a number if there is more than one SCART socket) then connect the VCR to the TV.

If there were any signal on the PVR's RF out for the VCR to receive then the TV would also be able to receive it so you wouldn't need the VCR

yes! I will try via the scart. Any ideas why the PVR wouldn't have an RF output as standard? Just scrimping on not needing to include an RF modulator?

Cost. All TVs now have scart inputs. Future TVs won't need/have RF analogue tuner inputs.

as Captain Cod saysabove the main reason is cost and in my experience the picturequality from the SCART is far superior to any RF link I have ever come across. It is a little frustrating as i woulkd like to use my old freeview box on a tv that doesnt have scart sockets (i have got a couple of 'spare' vcr's lying around but dont have enough room for a vcr,stb and TVin the room where i want to put them plus i dont want any more remotes than i realy have to have!!
