I have been using my 630H for about a year now, but only recently started to burn stuff onto disk (I ran out of hdd space and so didn't have much choice ), but it's left me with a couple of questions.

I don't seem to be able to record in high speed, whenever I get a load of half hour programs, edit out the rubbish so they're about 22 minutes long and then try to burn a load of them (about 8 on a disk I think) it copies in real time, so I have to leave it for several hours! During this time I can't watch my cable either, so it's doubly annoying! I thought I was able to record at high speed?

My second question is about the recordable media, I've never seen a pc DVDRW drive that can't also copy to CDRs, and given how cheap those are these days, it would be useful to burn an hour or so from the hdd onto a CD as SVCD or something - is there anyway this can be enabled?

What format/quality are you recording onto HDD with in the first place (HQ, SQ etc)?

Thanks for the reply.

I'm at work so I can't check, but I would imagine I have the recorder set to highest quality (makes sense I would have thought).
So in order to copy high quality recordings to dvd at high speed, I first have to record them to a dvd at real-time speed, record them back to the hdd at high speed (and a lower quality) and then burn them back to another dvd at high speed?? That's insane!!

I haven't done enough burning to dvd to notice the WS issue mentioned in that thread, but I'm going to be well hacked off if when I go to watch what I've recorded (and subsequently deleted from the hdd) it's been burnt in the wrong aspect ratio.

Shame, I've been really pleased with the device so far, but it sounds like half it's functionality is utter junk!

A standard DVD holds about 2hrs 5 mins in SP mode. That's the standard recording mode for DVDs, that would hold 5 (6 at apush) of your programmes. If you've recorded in XP onto HDD in the first place then you'll only be able to fit 2 of your programmes onto a DVD - if you're managing to fit all 8 in then you must be changing the recording mode quite drastically when burning, which could be why it's doing a real-time copy. It will do a real-time copy if you don't change the recording mode, so if you really want the highest possible quality you'll need to use more DVDs.

However, my advice is to drop your HDD recording quality from XP to SP. You won't notice much difference.

Thanks for all that. It appears that I have the hdd set to record in SP mode after all.

So if I understand all those manual entries, I can only high speed record from the hdd to a DVD if the program being recorded does not require any recoding? So as long as the amount of program data being transferred is less than 4.2Gb (or whatever it is), then high speed copying will be an option.
Shame there is no way to re-encode programs already recorded in SP to one of the lower quality formats.

Do you know if there is any way to get these machines to burn to CD?

An important point is also how you edit the edit ads out:

If you use frame-accurate editing you can't record in high speed mode, only real time (I use this mode for stuff I want to keep with all trace of ads removed).

If you use the other editing mode (not frame eaccurate) you can record in high speed - but you might not have 'perfect' editing.

I have bought a job lot of DVD-RW and have been high speed recording the contents of the hdd off onto them, I'm not getting as much on each disk, obviously, but I am slowly freeing up drive space and I can record over the disks once I've watched what's on there.

Thanks for everyone's help, although the question still stands about CDs. Any idea anyone?
