DHD4000 why no SW upgrade ?

Howdy - greenhorn here folks

I've had my T DHD4000 for quite a few months now, and never get the new V2 software. In the engineering menu i have code 1 ...1.7.7 code 2... blank

How come so many people get this upgrade, but mine remains on V1.7.7 ?? I get my sig from Sandy Heath if thats any help.

2ndly ..do the OEM HDD's on these use normal IDE ATA drives ? In case i want to fit a bigger one.

3rdly...i cant find MHEG in the engineer menu sub menus, though its nice to know my HDD is arounf 33 degrees C
Am i looking in the wrong place perhaps ?

Do you get the nightly updates to the programme guide?

Yes i do. For the last 5 months i've owned this box, i slap it into standby when going to bed.

Very rarely am i up past 3am watching F/V when the message comes up to tell me that i need to go to standby for the EPG

You can upgrade using a normal IDE ATA drive. (Strictly speaking the OEM drive is a bit special in that the firmware is optimised for AV use, but you'll get away with a normal one).

The maximum drive size the DHD400 can use is 137GB so 120GB drives are popular. It's best to get a 5400 rpm drive if possible (less heat than a 7200 rpm) but these are getting harder to get hold of.

I used a Samsung 120 GB drive myself but a search will find other drives people have used.

That eliminates any reception problems with Mux D then. On another thread I read that someone had contacted the Thomson number and that they had been unable to help.

You could try 4tv. Have a look at their web site at
http://www.4tv.net. The e-mail address doesn't seem to work, but you could try writing a letter to see if they can help.

MHEG is an option in one of the normal user menus, you don't need to be in the engineers menu for that. However, in the engineers menu it does tell you the level of code that's in both the flash memories and which one is active. If the other one already has 2.3.9 in it then it will never upgrade automatically, you have to perform a 'software revert' from the setup -> technical info' menu to get it to switch.

Thanks DX - i must add that i did read a lot of that thread on the 4000 HD upgrade, but fell asleep ( 35 pages ! ! )
I'm seriously thinking of a laptop HD with a converter. I put one of these in my PC ( rescued from my previous laptop ) to add a 2nd drive, and you wouldnt know its there, its that quiet.
The capacity is another thing i had read before i dozed off so armed with that advice, i'll not bother going above 120, as i'm not fussed about the last 8 gig.

Thanks Trevor - i'll go back and have another look.

EDIT...i've been though the whole menu system, and the option to turn off MHEG is not there. The only place its even mentioned is in the techincal help menu, where it simply says that its " ON "

PS code 1 = 1.7.7 code 2 = blank

MHEG is in Menu -> Setup -> Features -> Interactivity (mheg) and can be set to on or off.

It worries me a little that the other code image is blank. Maybe that's what's confisunig it - or maybe the other flash chip is broken and won't flash which might explain why it won't update overnight - I know it flashes the non-active one but if it's busted then maybe it can't.

Hi Trev - thanks , yes i found it where you said it was. Embarrassing that i'd been through that menu and never saw it though

I'm kinda betting meself that no one else here has one of the codes thats blank - just to make things that bit harder in finding an answer

PS i also have RF mod turned off, but is that useful or not, do you know ?

RF modulation is for plugging another TV into the aerial output from the DHD4000 and being able to tune a spare channel into that to get digital TV on a TV without a SCART socket.

I suspect the the code being blank is a problem but what it means is another matter. Maybe an email to the Thomson support people would get you a considered answer from a technician.

Anyone one know if there will be any further updates for the DHD4000 ? Maybe to include series link.

They never tell us in advance, the updates just appear out of the blue.

I would doubt very much if there will be any further updates to a machine that has not been in production for about a year now. If you're lucky there might be the occasional bugfix release if something in the Freeview broadcasts changed so much as to make it unusable in the future.

Probably true. 2.3.9 seems pretty bug-free, the only one I fall over regularly involves not returning to the main menu with Exit in some obscure circumstance - pressing Menu sorts it.

Yes, I've seen that one and I think it has to do with leaving it in the EPG menu before it does its overnight download. When it powers up in the morning, it comes back up in the EPG but when you exit from that it goes to the main menu but won't go any further. As you say, hitting the menu button sorts it.

The more annoying one I find is the one that sends the EPG back to the current channel if you set a programme on BBC1 to record. I think the EPG has to be in single channel view to see this one.
