Interesting article on El Reg! http://www.theregister.co.uk/2007/02...back_on_earth/

Sky are planning on launching a terrestrial PPV service using MPEG4 to squeeze 4 channels into their existing 3 channel MPEG2 spectrum. Don't get me wrong, but that seems like a lot of effort just to be able to get a couple of extra PPV customers, especially as they won't have the capacity to offer many interactive features which makes me think, are there any likely spectrum owners out there they might be eyeing up in order to be able to offer a real alternative / PPV addition to FreeView?

Yeah, it does seem silly - esp when they have to produce a new box for anyone who uses it. Surely they'd offer it over ADSL? Or push Sky proper to people. I don't get it...

And, with respect to this forum, if Sky are willing to go to this much trouble to get their channels on-air why can't they come to a deal with Homechoice/Tiscali to get Sky One (or even Sky Sports News and Sky Three) on to our system?

You're not comparing like for like. Sky want to maximise revenue stream for their premium channels. In fact I believe they only have Sky One on Cable because the regulator stipulated it

No, Sky One is not on cable because the regulator stipulates it. Its purely a commercial decision why Sky sell it to. So they can remove it from cable if they want to. The boss of Sky said that they want to make a Sky One a reason people buy Sky and give them a competitive advantage.
