I say this because my children are invloved in upcoming bands and until I talk about how good Neil Young was, they haven't a scobbie.

But then you give them a copy of some of his stuff and they come back totally gobsmacked as to how good he reaaly was.

In fact, some have even have had a rethink to their music.

How many other young musicians have ever listened?

And if you have, can you honestly say that you haven't been affected ....or even inspired..changed your music a little?

Well i'm no musician, but Neil Young is a legend. His music is brilliant - couple of my favourite tracks is the 10 minute "Cowgirl in the Sand", and of course "Southern Man".

Young people today, to their credit are listening to bands of the past more than any other generation before. Thanks to the digital age, and the price of albums being so affordable.

Can't speak for musicians, but he's definitely an exceptional songwriter. On The Beach is my favourite album of his, there's some really good songs on it. Revolution Blues is about the Charles Manson family and the imagery in the lyrics is really eery. He wrote songs that made you think, unlike a lot of the pap that gets into the current charts.

He is essentual, without Neil Young I doubt there would of been grunge in the 90s.
He is a bit like Pink Floyd in that they are successful and very important yet they still manage to avoid being considered mainstream.

I'm not a musician, but I love Neil Young's music.

I was about 18 when a friend lent me Harvest. The soft, country sound and rich orchestration of 'Heart of Gold', 'Old Man' and 'Needle and the Damage Done' make them timeless classics.

After the Goldrush and Rust Never Sleeps are others that I would recommend to new listeners, as both demonstrate his acoustic as well as his hard rock prowess.

Neil Young is one of the most accomplished and important rock artists of the late 20th Century. His work has been recognised by modern-day artists and I believe should continue to do so for a long time to come.

He is a genius who has managed to maintain his credibility from the 60s to now.

He really has two separate personas, probably better known for his singer songwriting folky stuf, but then he turns into a manic rocker with Crazy Horse.

I can listen to anything by him, but probably prefer the rock stuff if pushed. His Live Rust, and Rust Never Sleeps albums are amazing, as are Freedom and Sleeps With Angels.

Shame really that a lot of teens today think the likes of Mika (who I think is truly dreadful and talentless), Kaiser Chiefs, Razorlight etc are fantastic and will be around for years. If you allowed all of them their natural 'musical' lifetimes and added them together they wouldn't have the lifetime in music that Neil Young has and still has.

Razorlight and Kaiser Chiefs probably will be around for years.....churning out the same old muck they've done with all their albums.

Neil Youngs music is exceptional and covers a large amount of ground, meaning most people can enjoy his music. Sadly, many people now listen with their eyes, rather than their ears - as George Harrison said in an interview in the 1990s. Wonder what he would think of it all now...

Neil Young is a genius. Live Rust is probably one of the greatest live concerts DVD's around.
A lot of archive stuff going to be released in the future aswell, 'Live at the Filmore' being the first. Cant wait for the rest.

I hadn't heard of Neil Young until a year ago, but I have to admit his music is brilliant. I have his Greatest Hits and Harvest albums, they are brilliant.

After all that I said earlier, I have to admit that I haven't listened to his latest album 'Living With War'.

Has anyone here had a chance to listen to it/strongly recommend it? Somehow it seems to have been over-looked this side of the pond

I'd value your thoughts.

I've only heard of him and his music through Eddie Vedder and his cover of Rockin' In The Free World. Seems like I should listen to more of his material, based on your opinions and those I've heard elsewhere (my former school teacher was a big fan of his). Any recommendations on where I should start, albums wise?

The albums that I've mentioned in post #11 are a good place to start

What a great response. I was kind of dreading coming back to have a read at this thread incase you all thought I was just an old romantic fuddy duddy. But I'm more with it than my kids, let me tell ya.

Jan001, I haven't heard his new album but will be most interested to hear any reviews and will be having a look around to find out more about it.

Is it available on Amazon?

Living with war is superb - it's the perfect "protest" album reminiscent of what you used to get in the 60's - obviously aimed at the totally pointless, illegal & unjust war in Iraq, the lyrics to "lets impeach the President" show he hasn't lost his songwriting skills.

I like it, it has the old Neil Young on it! Plenty of bitterness and anger. Saying that i dont think it is as good as his previous concept album, Greensdale?
