Timer recording question
martink
12-02-2007
Hi - quick question if I may. I have seen a number of things written that imply that when the Toppy starts a recording when it was in standby before, it activates the main TV SCART socket, to the extent that the TV would switch to that input if auto switching is enabled on the TV - is that correct?

If so, is there a TAP to prevent this or a plan to stop this happening in a future firmware update? Or am I missing some reason this is a good idea?

Cheers,

Martin

Yes what you say is correct and a lot of people have complained about this on these forums - the only thing I dont understand is why.

I watch all my TV through the Toppy and so this is never a problem - this seems such an easy solution I just dont get the complaints at all.

To answer your other question I am sure someone posted not so long ago that there is a tap that prevents this.

Here we are, enjoying the latest DVD release, three quarters of the way through - really citing - when Toppy fires up to record Corrie. Result - commercials in middle of DVD. Things get thrown.

Which TAP fixes it?

I dont think this is something that has been or can be fixed by a TAP. I thought I had heard it could be stopped by cutting pin 8 on the scart cable although I have not tried this at home and it may have other consequences.

So If you try it dont butcher a beloved IXOS etc but might be worth sacrificing some old cable lying in the bottom of a draw or from the pound shop. Dont blame me if it does not work

Personally like yorkie I just turn the Toppy on whenever I turn the TV on; problem solved.

OK this is something I have not thought of - but the solution is still the same isnt it i.e. turn the Toppy on.

If I am wrong about the tap here is another thought - would not a scart switching box also prevent this?

Yes a SCART switch box may solve the problem as long as it's not one of the automatic switching types. I wish the Toppy didn't behave like this but apparently it's never likely to change due to the way the firmware loader operates I believe. If I plan watching a DVD and know a recording is coming up I just switch the Toppy on beforehand to prevent the interuption.

I use an automatic switching type, alothough depending upon what is plugged in where you can set a devices priority level.
As my toppy is basicly my main TV tuner, and its on all the time its plugged into socket 1- lowest priority, then my DVD player gets the next priority followed by anything else.
If im watching a DVD the scart switch automaticly switches to the DVD player output regardless of what the toppy is upto ( ie recording/ powering down/powering up etc) and the toppy is only allowed onto the TV when everything else conected to the Scart switcher is off and not putting anything out.

There is the solution of using the SCART switching on the Topfield itself.

I have my Toppy wired up to my TV via RGB, my DVD player is also outputing RGB and is plugged in to the other SCART on the Toppy.

If the DVD player is on before the Toppy switches on you carry on getting the DVD Player output on the screen.

To switch to the Toppy you use the button on the Toppy remote looking like a Satellite.

It is the middle button to the right of the radio / tv button if i remember correctly.

Hope that helps.

I have my Toppy connected through my DVD player.

My DVD player has a scart bypass socket so takes in RGB from the toppy and outputs RGB to the TV. If I am watching a DVD the scart is already in use by my DVD player and the fact the toppy switches on gets blocked by the DVD player thus not affecting my viewing at all. I have nothing connected to the toppy VCR socket.
