Increase Call Minder Wait Time

Call Minder was recently activated on my line, and I'm wondering if there is a way to increase the time it takes to kick in from when the phone starts ringing, because at the moment Call Minder keeps taking over the call before I even have chance to get to the phone.

you can select different options on callminder, dial 1571 then press 2 then 3 and then you will have 4 rining options, short, meduim, long or no ringing at all.

I don't seem to be able to do this, as I dial 1571, it says I have no new messages and then hangs up, no options.

No idea, it came on the other day when I told Pipex to enable caller display, so I assumed it was call minder.

you have BT answer, on the free version you can't change the ring time.

The reason I say that is because, IMHO, 'free' 1571 services are nothing more than a clever con by call provider companies to make money.

That's because, if you call someone who has the 'service' and they happen to be engaged on a call already, you go straight through to the 1571 'machine'. Your call is connected and you are charged 3p connection and a minimum of 3p for the first minute (if you're on BT or whatever your own calls provider charges). So, even if you don't want to leave a message, that call has cost you 6p. Trying again (and again, and again) might have the same result too (starts getting expensive).

If the person you called didn't have 1571, you'd have heard an engaged tone, would not have been charged anything, would have realised they were busy on a call and would have tried again after a few minutes.

An answering machine set to answer after 8 or 9 rings is a far more 'friends and family friendly' device for when you're out - F&F quickly learn (or you can even tell them), that, if you haven't answered by, say, the fifth ring, you're not going to so they'll have the option of hanging on until the answering machine kicks in and leaving a message or hanging up and trying later.

I dumped 1571 some time ago and picked up a very nice brand new BT Decor 500 LST/answering machine on ebay for about £10.

I don't know how many people actually keep 1571 when the disadvantages to their callers is explained to them. Only one that I know of and I suspect that they have a few fewer callers now as their response to complaints is to tell their 'friends' not to be so tight.

Well, I never asked for the service in the first place, as I said, it just came on. I'm think I might rid of it, it's becoming very annoying.

to Heinz,

many people like yourself have free calls or inclusive calls on their line now, BTA 1571 kicking in on engaged would not incurr the 3p call connection fee in many cases. So its not all bad

Keep the crusade going tho coz I agree with you, however, I put BTA 1571 on peoples lines on a daily basis, they ask for it, its never gonna go away so you've got to look at it positively.
