IS my Ipod broken?? Advice for a MP3 beginner appreciated...

Hello all, I got an IPOD for Christmas (8GB Black Nano) and I am generally very pleased with it, but I think it might not be working to its full spec.

Basically, when I have the headphones in it doesn’t go that loud (i.e. walking to the bus stop I can hardly hear it over the traffic when it’s on full volume).

I have a docking station speaker thing and it goes well loud when it’s on that, so I just assumed it must have been the headphones, as I heard that the ones you get with the IPOD are famously naff. So I bought some new £20 headphones and the volume was still low, making me think it was the headphone or socket or something.

Also, its kinda p1ssing on my new years resolution of going jogging (no point with no music!!)– so I was wondering if anyone could give me some advice???

(Anything appreciated, I am a total beginner with MP3s etc but spend more time fiddling with it then listening to it !!)

PS. It should be under warranty as Father Christmas got it from The Carphone Warehouse.

have you checked the volume limiter - it might be set at midway and needs adjusting.

The volume limiter setting sounds the most likely candidate, by default it is set ridiculously low.

The docking station presumably has it's own mini amplifier which is why the sound is fine when plugged into that.

What is "gopod" exactly?

My new volume is quite loud now i have just tried it at work, but not tried it with background noise as yet.

It makes it louder! iPods sold in the EU have to have their volume restricted or something like that.

Correct.

Ahh even more people to have hearing tests when they hit 30 or 35 as they blast their ears to bits for no reason. Just because they think all music should be played loud enough to be heard 20 foot away.

My iPod earphones just go distorted when turned up the slightest bit loud. I only like turning it up when its a fast song that I really really like
Otherwise, just loud enough to drown out cars is sufficient

Gopod doesn't work with a second generation nano, though they are working on it.

You also need to alter the EQ depending on what sort of audio you are playing.

That's why I don't use my original ipod earphones, plugged in my sennheiser MX500's straight away. Much better sound, no distortion!

I can also recommend the MX500s - they make a huge difference and aren't that expensive.

Theres another way to boost the volume via itunes.

Connect your ipod up. select all the songs in your library and right click and choose preferences i think and in there there is a tab for volume it will have
-100 0 +100

It will be set to 0 so drag it and change it to +100

I find it amazing that people seem to need to have things so loud, I hardly ever put my iPod above halway, two thirds at the highest. Either I've got great hearing or most of the public have damaged theirs.
