Nessun Dorma sung by Pavarotti. I have to leave the room if it is played, it reminds me of my Nan.

Nothing Compares 2 U Sinead O'Connor, for very, very personal reasons.

Kingston Town UB40, my favourite band, for some reason this song makes me cry like a baby.

This Woman's Work, Kate Bush also The Man with the Child in his eyes.

The Greatest love of all, George Benson, reminds me of a really bad relationship break up

Chasing Cars, Snow Patrol, want this played at my funeral

Abide with Me, it was sang at my granddad's funeral and now on Cup Final day I have to mute it when it is sang, still makes me cry though.

Concrete Angel by Martina McBride is a contender. It's a country/pop ballad, about a little girl who dies from neglect and abuse because nobody around her speaks up about what's happening. It's incredibly moving because it's so rooted in reality when you think about some of the terrible cases of child neglect that have been in the news over time.

This bit always gets me the most:

Through the wind and the rain
She stands hard as a stone
In a world that she can't rise above
But her dreams give her wings
And she flies to a place where she's loved
Concrete angel

Goodbye My Lover - James Blunt.
Bright Eyes - Art Garfunkel, that always makes me want to cry.
When I was in infant school, my teacher used to play music to us when we were in the gym. She played Bright Eyes and had to talk me down from the top of the wall bars as a result! I was sobbing and wouldn't come down. I've never been able to watch Watership down!

Thought of a few more,
The Killing of Georgie - Rod Stewart
How Come, How Long - Babyface
Runaway Train - Soul Asylum

For utter misery some country/folk songs
Christmas Shoes, Two little Orphans, Jeannies afraid of the dark.
The Killing of Georgie is a sad song but Rod killed the emotional impact of the song IMO ... he pouted and preened his way through his performance of it and made it all about him. Crass.

I agree with those posters who've said ..
Nothing Compares 2 U - Sinnead O'Connor
Bright Eyes - Art Garfunkel
The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face - Roberta Flack

also ..
The Sea - Corinne Bailey Rae
Haunt Me - Sade

My Nan died this year and this song was played at her funeral (my first funeral as first person close to me in my family to die) so was such a sad day and this song played

Look For Me In Rainbows - Vicky Brown
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D9qs3Vq_AQQ

Also with me being gay and rainbows by a symbol for that i think that as a way of her watching and looking out for me.

Also this song by Sia that i've always come in and out of and recently listened to again, you know how she sings shes very mumbly i didnt quite catch the lyrics and i went to read them and find they was about a person close to her that died (I also found out it was a Carpenters song). I picked this Live version as you can understand her.

I Go To Sleep - Sia

If We Hold On Together - Diana Ross. It's utterly sappy but still has the desired effect.

Saddest - crikey there are so very many and there isn't one in particular that I have a personal connection with but Bright Eyes would probably make me tear up quite easily. As with someone else here, I haven't ever been able to watch it.

The most emotional song for me is Rag Doll by Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons. Everything about it is perfection. Incredible harmonies, Frankie's unworldly vocals and the message to his rag doll "I love you just the way you are".

Another vote for "Bright Eyes" here, beautiful, but so sad...
Also, I'd like to suggest "Dear Father" by Neil Diamond.

But my absolute fave, sad song is The Raven Who Refused to Sing, by Steve Wilson.
Please, check out the video:

Bright Eyes is played during the saddest part of the film so don't ever go there!!

What's that ballad from the 70s that tells the tale of the singer meeting, a girl ,getting married then she suddenly dies & he sings that he misses her? That's horrifically sad.

the one that made me emotional is David Bowie-Lazarus(it upsets me because he like saying Goodbye) and Heroes(They played on BBC and Channel 4 news on the day of his passing )
Heroes only seems bad because of Bowie's recent death. I think in time, the life affirming , hopeful qualities of the song will be appreciated again

As for Lazerus, it think it's inseparable from that stunning video. The video is desperately sad, but what an incredible & powerful way to say Goodbye. How gutsy of him to do that at a time when he knew he really was gonna die, not very long after the video was shot (the video was shot In November & he was told there was nothing more the doctors could do in November) he died 8 weeks (or less) after the video was shot.
What's the saddest about it for me is that the scenes of Bowie being inspired to write, then writing more manically, then being "pulled" back into the closet/grave, indicated his real life emotions at the time. It indicates that he never really came to accept his death & that's really gut wrenching to watch.

"The winner takes it all"..Abba. That song was released at a bad time relationship wise for me and it still brings a lump to my throat.
I think it's one of Abba's most maudlin songs. It's also one of their best.

All In Love Is Fair - Stevie Wonder https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AiJqDwJDruU

Was watching a documentary about Motown the other day and Berry Gordy said he didn't particularly like Stevie's voice and he hated dealing with his mother, to the extent that it almost put him off signing Michael Jackson!!!

How can anyone not like Stevie's voice??? he has the ability to make you feel joyful about being alive and heartbroken all at the same time.
