I looked up Ronan by Taylor Swift after seeing it mentioned here. What a heartbreaker!

This I always found quite emotional, it actually sounds quite sad although it isn't supposed to be. I admit it is of its time 1950s. But a lot of good songs were written around then and the singers could manage "long tones" without them breaking up or them going off key.

Jo Stafford

"No Other Love."

It was used as the "close out" song for a documentary on the crews of the defunct Russian old nuclear submarine fleet.

Here's another, this is older, 1940s, this was used as the "close out" tune in an episode of the TV drama "Cold Case," (WASPS)

Martha Tilton.

"I'll Walk Alone."

Even the lyrics alone are desperately sad. One of the saddest songs ever for me.

Most emotional Genesis song for me is Afterglow, especially the way Phil Collins performed it on 3 Sides Live.

Songs that make me sad usually relate, for me, to some traumatic event.

On a personal level, Chicago's If you Leave Me Now and Leonard Cohen's Hey, That's No Way To Say Goodbye can bring the tears.

But for me, the one that sticks in my memory most, was seeing Juliet Turner sing THIS on the Town Hall steps of Omagh, after the bombing.

Neil Young - Philadelphia

Just everything about it. The film, the ending....that song being played over the home cine film clips.

Cannot hear it now without feeling very emotional.

Beautiful song.

Love that song, and one that I haven't listened to for years.

Forget just how good her early stuff was - that and tracks like 3 Babies and The Last Day of Our Acquaintance.

Roger Daltry - Oceans Away https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ayskp8It8rs (Reminds me of a time when a girlfriend and I were on opposite sides of the world)

Eric Clapton - Tears in Heaven. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VRsJlAJvOSM

Gary Moore - Still Got the Blues https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t1kHdIU8Uek

Bruce Springsteen - My Hometown https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z6LABdHtkUA

And he may not have been the greatest singer in the world but I find this really poignant, Keith Moon - In My Life https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=si-pZiaGrQI

Gerry Rafferty - Family Tree https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yLzaebMwGXQ

Strange Fruit by Billie Holiday
( though I prefer Nina Simones version)

It took me a couple of listens to realize the awful sadness of what the songs about, and then the penny dropped.

When I was a child -
'Seasons in the Sun' by Terry Jacks (could NOT listen to it without crying, possibly because I was so young when my Dad passed away).
As an adult -
'He Stopped Loving Her Today' by George Jones. His voice gives me goosebumps anyway but I didn't know this particular number until I heard it on a country music compilation album about 25 years ago. Could not believe how sad it was!! 😩😩😩

The acoustic version of Stereophonics' Local Boy In The Photograph always brings a lump to my throat. It makes me think about a friend who died far too young several years ago.
