Green Fields of France - various artists have sung it, but it's about a soldier dying in WW1

I should avoid these topics like the plague, as once I start I can't stop!!! I once did a "soundtrack to your life" survey on myspace and obsessed over it for 3 hours!

I've thought of a fair few though, here they are:

*10CC - I'm not in Love
*Abba - Winner takes it all
*Snow Patrol - You could be happy
*Michael Bolton - How am I supposed to live without you?
*The Goo Goo Dolls - Iris/Black Balloon
*Phil Collins - Against all odds
*Damien Rice - Cannonball/Blowers daughter
*Rod Stewart - Handbags and Glad rags
*The Beatles - Yesterday
*The Cars - Who's gonna drive you home?
*Madonna - Power of goodbye
*Dido - Here with me
*No Doubt - Don't speak
*Toni Braxton - Unbreak my heart
*Tony Rich Project - Nobody Knows
*Take That - Back for good
*Bonnie Raitt - I can't make you love me
*Fleetwood Mac - Go your own Way
*Smashing Pumpkins - Disarm
*Elton John - Candle in the wind/Sorry seems to be the hardest word
*Tracy Chapman - ALL OF THEM!
*Will Young - Leave right now (this one really gets to me for some reason!)

And there we have it!!!

I particularly love this one - it's so desperate and you just KNOW he's not going to get her back!

What a great thread

I find Dance With My Father by Luther Vandross incredibly moving, even though I don't really relate to it personally. It's just sung so beautifully and it's so very sad

Also, Fields of Athenry (Paddy Reilly) is another one I can't listen to without sniffling.

Songbird by Eva Cassidy has such lovely angelic qualities, but I also love I Know You By Heart and her version of Time After Time.

Lastly, Honey, by Bobby Goldsboro. Like Dance With My Father it's a beautifully sung, and very sad, song.

May I just .. Goo Goo Doll fans.. you have good taste..

The ones that I think are emotional, or have deeper messages and meanings or just plain sad are as follows..

Goo Goo Dolls... of course..may i just say.. they AWESOME live.. and no Ronan is not better at all.. and they didn't give their personal permission for him to cover it either.. the it being..

Iris - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B9F4LjSb_Cs
also..

Without You Here - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EoCdqSgSiXU - ignore the fan vid its attached to.. its a new favourite of mine and completely beautiful...

plus..

Better Days - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L4MH8s1ZBtg - has a real message to it...

Another song that's amazing..

Lifehouse's "Everything" - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EBHZ4nz7gd4 - again set to another fanvid (Roswell) but it wierdly fits the song..

AAAAAAND..

Dishwalla "Collide" - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HQvEQFiG19I - attached to another fan vid (harry potter)..

These are songs that I find really hit me.. they may not make you feel sad.. but they are truly emotional in my eyes..

Absolutely. I think the Dubliners or Forresters (Irish folk bands) did it and yes, it's very moving.

P P Arnold "The First Cut in the Deepest" - recovering from a bruised heart

Labi Siffre "(Something inside) So Strong" - we WILL overcome our oppressors, whoever they are

some traditional songs are pretty emotional -
"Danny Boy" (or the hymn "I cannot tell" which uses the tune aka "Londonderry Air")
"In the Bleak Midwinter" (by Rosetti) I love the line "earth lay cold as iron, water like a stone"
"Hearts of Oak" must have been pretty rousing too, back when the navy actively defended our shores
"Over the hills and far away" - another oldie about having to go to war

Blue - Breathe Easy (Video) (Live at Wembley)

Lee's voice in this is so awe-inspiringly, bone-chillingly, hauntingly good....they all are, but Lee's voice really stands out.

Others are:

Daniel Bedingfield - You're Not The One
Audioslave - Be Yourself
The Corrs - Runaway
Kelly Clarkson - Because of You (this one particularly!)
Massive Attack - Teardrop

Good choice. Thanks for reminding me of that one - it's so beautiful and haunting, but also quite waspish in its humour.

For me it has to be Puff Daddy and Faith Evans - I'll be missing you.

It doesn't sound like a sad or emotional song but when you actually listen to the lyrics you do find yourself feeling sad and maybe even shredding a tear or 2

Other songs which do sound Sad/Emotional, for me, are

Kelly Clarkson - Because of you
Destiny's Child - Emotion
Whitney Houston - I will always love you
