Given up on the DHD4000....

Hello

My inwarranty box freezes every 5 minutes, sometimes christmas tree lights, sometimes the pic freezes but the sound carries on etc. I'm fed up with it. (see my posts about 3 months or so ago!!!)
I thought I had cured it by reverting firmware etc etc but the bugs are back with a vengence this time!!!

The setup can't make it over heat because I have another DHD4000 which can sit there happily and not crash.

It was from Argos online..they obviously don't have 'em anymore...so will Thomson repair these? Can you speak to Thomson on the phone? If so I'd be interested to know if anyone has spoken to them. I don't want to start taking the case off and fitting new fans etc - my other DHD4000 is fine...

Thanks...

There are definitely two batches of recorder in circulation - some of the ones Argos were selling were from the bad batch, I think, which overheat badly - have you tried running it with the lid off ?

There is absolutely no point in ringing Thomson - your contract is with Argos : it is their responsibility to either get the thing repaired by Thomson (unlikely) or offer you a part refund (you won't get a full refund because of the usage you have had out of it, albeit not very much from the sounds of it).

Personally, if it were me, I'd be ripping opend the case and adding a motherboard heatsink to the video chip

I agree in theory that this is what consumer law states, but on past experience (not with Thomson) then I suggest what actually will happen is:

1) If you contact Argos, provided you catch CS on a good day, they will offer you a full refund if you have the original receipt, you may even be able to persuade them to swap it for something similar in their current catalogue (even if the price is different). However they will have little or no enthusiasm for getting it repaired.

2) If you contact Thomson, whilst the SoGA doesn't make them liable, they will probably be happy to repair the item for your FoC, albeit with you having to pay the costs of getting the thing to them.

I know which one I'd go for!

Thomson details are:

THOMSON Sales UK Ltd
Unit 1 Zone D
Chelmsford Road Industrial Estate
Great Dunmow
ESSEX CM6 1GX
Tel : 01371 859871 Fax :01371 878035

YMMV - Rufus.

Thanks for the messages. I'd like to get it repaired as it is under manufacturers warranty!

I'll give 'em a call soon

Let me know how you get on. I'm having a few problems with mine: the picture goes intermittently black and white, and the sound level sometimes drops

If the sound and colour and occasionally dropping out then IMHO this sounds more like a connection issue, than a problem with the Tommy.

Before returning the box, have you checked your scart connections, or possibly tried changing scart leads?

Rufus.
