Lost my voice capabillity on my land line

My landline has stopped Recieving and making calls

i pick up the hand set and get a tone but it will not dial anyone
when people try to phone me they get the unobtainable tone

althou my broadband works!! and mt BBT telephone number is making and recieving calls

Does anybody know if im intitles to compensation from BT and if so what is usually? (luckily its only used as a fax line and i still have my BBT for outgoing and incomming calls)

Anybody know why this could have happened out of curriosity?

cheeers in advance

When you line hits the exchange it is split into two, one goes the the broadband service, the other goes to the voice telephone service. It\'s not unusual for one service to fail but not the other.

Your BTT will still work as that is using your broadband service, which hasn\'t failed.

You will be entitled to compensation as long as you don\'t ask for calls to that number being routed to your mobile, other landline number or BTT number.

It is only a line rental rebate these days though if you don't take the divert.

If you take the divert to a mobile you still get the rental rebate, calls diverted for free plus £1 a day towards calls made via mobile instead of the landline.

My landline is exactly the same and has been since Wednesday morning.

There's no DC on the incoming line so all the phones are totally dead but when I fired up the broadband router this afternoon I was amazed when it connected perfectly.

I'm guessing equipment failure or finger trouble at the exchange.

sounds like you have one leg dis ,an external fault on the openreach network (between the exchange and youre socket) before you phone youre provider ref the fault unscrew the face plate on the master socket and test youre phone on the port behind the face plate if you do not get dial tone at this point book a service call via youre provider there should not be any charges raised as it is in the network.

The BT engineer connected a box of tricks to the master socket and found there was a break in the circuit approx 40 metres down the line.
A new cable from the telegraph pole to the house and now all is working fine.
