Classic fight: Snes vs Megadrive

Hands down the Sega Megadrive was the better console and is one of the best performing consoles of all time

Life span from 1989 to 1998 a great console to play on.

I preferred the SNES but there is no denying that the mega-drive was an awesome system (Heres to hoping Thunderforce 3 makes it to the VC)
I think the megadrive will be remembered for many years to come.

I think the SNES was better.. mainly due to the more diverse games that were out for it.. The Megadrive was fantastic for games like the Sonic collection, Madden 92, Shinobi.. but when you look at the SNES with Mario 4, Zelda, Chrono Trigger, Street Fighter 2 Turbo, Mario Kart, Final Fantasy II, Super Metroid.. the list of games could go on and on.

The SNES graphics and sound p***ed all over the Megadrive, no competition

Megadrive graphics were so much better than the Snes.
there are loads of comparisons of games which were made for both consoles and usually megadrive came out on top.
One of them was Aladin which looked so much better on MD.

I absolutely adored both of these machines, and couldn't honestly pick between them. I played Super Mario World and Zelda to completion dozens of times. Ditto Sonic and Streets of Rage.

At the time I sided with the SNES more, but to be honest with hindsight I´m perhaps a bit more nostalgic about the MD now.

Both tremendous systems.

49m bought SNES's, only 29m bought Megadrives.

Biggest selling Megadrive game is Sonic the Hedgehog 2 with sales of 6m. The biggest selling SNES game is Super Mario World with 17m sales.

Most people I knew had a SNES.

You really must be joking.....the SNES had a colour palette far larger than the MD, and could most importantly display those colours on screen more.

It's laughable to think that the MD could produce a game as beautiful as the Donkey Kong Country games, or Final Fantasy 3. Secret of Mana is another game that both in audio terms and visually would never have worked on the Megadrive.

Just to add to that list!

DESERT STRIKE, JUNGLE STRIKE, STREETS OF RAGE 1, 2, and 3, revenge of shinobi, alex the kid, mortal kombat 1,2,3, the first fifa soccer, pete sampras tennis, brian lara cricket, sonic 1, 2, 3, speed ball 2, phantasy star, out run echho the dolphin.

I could go on and on with sega titles. The only place the megadrive got trounced sales wise is japan. In europe the megadrive was more popular.Theres still disputes that it was in north america to.the megadrive didn't have a bigger color pallete, but it was a faster machine, thats a well known FACT, wether beatlegod wants to admit it or not.Anything nintendo had, the megadrive had, maybe with the exception of rpgs, but most of the snes rpgs wern't even released in europe, so in europe, sega wins.

funny enouth, i did prefer sega over nintendo every generation, except for the N64 era.I prefered the master system over the nes, mario 1 and 3 was he best though, the megadrive over the snes for reasoms i stated, though again mario kart ans street fighter 2 was the best, and the dreamcast overwhealmingly over the gamecube

sega ruled in there console days. i cud think of a dozen ips that they had that beat any of nintendo, bar platformers. Its just a shame the company was run by morons

Not only that, the sprites in MD games flickered a lot in certain conditions. Strange also that no-ones come back with a retort about the MD audio.

Yes but in Europe more people brought the Sega Megadrive. I was just going by my friends and they all had the Megadrive. Im not too bothered really I just prefered Sonic to Mario at least in 2D anyway, couldn't care for either now.

I don't hate the Snes though because if id known of Final Fantasy at the time I may have had to get a Snes instead.

It has to be the snes for me,i still rate it the best console ever with so many fantastic games.I loved the likes of Legend Of Zelda, Mario Kart and Secret Of Mana.
Most of my friends had a snes aswell and it was a more powerful console than the megadrive.
I borrowed a Megadrive off a mate and it had some good games but for me snes games were the ones i most enjoyed.

It's important to remember graphics and sound do not a greater game make.

The audio was brilliant, and utilised more than the audio on the SNES. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles was a brilliant example of the audio.

I do concede that the SNES was a far better console than the MD, but in all honsesty, I preferred the MD in that gen. Sonic and Knuckles on the 32x attachment was my favourite game then and is still a cracker

I'm not so sure, I think the SNES won in Europe in the end, as Sega released the Saturn early, which basically killed off the Megadrive, leaving the SNES to run freely as the main affordable home console.

Whatever sales were though, looking back at the MD's finest titles Vs the Super NES's best....it would be hard to argue against the SNES.

Secret Of Mana and Final Fantasy 3 had sound that blew anything the Megadrive could offer out the window as well. Actraiser was the same.

On a purely audio level, the SNES was absolutely years ahead.

How could they though? It would be like saying Plymouth Argyle is a better football team than Manchester United.

The audio on the SNES was unquestionably better.

Listen to "Speedball 2" and "Lotus Esprit" on the Megadrive.....totally awful and highly compromised compared to the Amiga. The SNES had Final Fantasy 3....nuff said really.

Too true, too true. Mario Kart is possibly the most playable game ever, and games like Final Fantasy and Mana kept players hooked for months on end.
