Height of Dancers - Advantage/Disadvantage?

Regarding height difference again...

watching ITT one night and CRH is saying that Emma and Darren are 'perfect' heights for one another (doing ballroom). He is at least 2-3" taller than her wearing heels. Is this ideal?

My partner is just about an inch taller than me wearing heels for ballroom (though he gains an inch in Latin).

Do you think that there needs to be a little bit of a difference to emphasise 'leader' and 'follower'?

I can see where you are coming from however should it not be completely obvious (if the dances are danced correctly) who the leader is? I personally dont think it is for this reason as much as it is for aesthetic purposes. We all know how important the overall appearance is.

So does it 'look' better if the guy has a couple of inches on the girl? (and more for ballroom/Latin?) The point I was trying to get with the 'Leader' comment is that a couple of inches in height may signify who's in charge.

CRH also said Zoe and Ian ( Thats for you elizabeth Jo!!!) were perfect heights too -was he a few inches bigger than her? I cant quite remember.
I love watching all the professionals dance - they leave me in awe!

I don't really know anything about dancing except that I enjoy watching Ian (and Camilla I suppose) dance more than any of the others whether it's latin or ballroom.

The height of the dancers does not really distinguish leader and follower. The man leads and the lady follows, except perhaps in the foxtrot where the lady has to 'assume' the lead in some places in order to keep the dance flowing. the man does not surrender the lead willingly. I have been told off for manipulating the dance by anticipating where it was going next.

Thanks.

Camilla is quite a few inches smaller than Ian. He is 6ft 4 and I think she might be 5ft 8in/9 she looks taller in the 3inch heels.

Not at all. I've seen world semi finalist couples where the lady is in fact taller than the man in the past.

The characterisation of the choreography just speaks for itself in defining the male and female roles.

Hmmm, maybe I did choose the wrong word and fair comment about you and I agreeing to differ. It would be boring if we all liked the same thing ... dancers bodyshape included!

For the record, I really don't have a problem with people challenging my opinions (since I do my fair share of challenging myself!), as long as it doesn't degenerate into personal attack. Elizabethjo simply said that she thought my choice of word was wrong and that she see's nothing to dislike about tall dancers such as Camilla dancing Latin. That's nothing for me to get het up over.

Still not keen on tall Jivers tho!!!!! (dodges incoming!)

Did you mean them dancing together?

Just to make you jealous I spent some time staring at Ians shirt front today. He was wearing a lovely turquiose blue shirt open to the waist but he did have a white Tshirt under it. We did some foxtrot and then Samba. He was teaching me the samba walks and botofogos. I did get it in the end, he said all I needed was some firm handling!!!! I agree with that so long as it is Ian doing the firm handling, lol!

I can't tell you how much I wish I was you right now!! Shame about the t-shirt though...still, SO LUCKY!! I want firm handling from him!!! Maybe if I got a sex change I could dance with him...now there's a thought!

And yes, I did mean they should dance together (much hotter than dancing with a woman, I've gotta say! But actually Camilla is quite attractive...damn, now I'm confused.)

Interesting thought Ian and Matt dancing together! Dont think I will suggest it though! He does teach male solo dancers though I dont know if he actually dances with them. Usually latin dancing which they can learn on their own. Perhaps you could have a go at that?

I liked the firm handling bit I have to say! He is very strong and so it is pointless trying to resist. I loved the shirt, he bought it in Miami when he was on holiday. Dressed very smart casual today as he had come in especially for me as he normally doesnt teach on a Friday.

That'd be cool if I had some money and lived in england...perhaps when I get a job and move to Reading to stalk him, then I'll get lessons! In the mean time I will sit here and continue to drown in my own jealousy.

Also, you should totally suggest the Matt thing, who wouldn't wanna see that?

Where do you live then? Not Holland I presume as Ian spends a lot of time there, you might have met him there.

I would not dare suggest him dancing with Matt. Although we do get on very well and have some very interesting converations I dont think that would be one I could attempt. There is a place somewhere on the south coast where they have a male only dancing club and there is likely to be a challenge to the rules to allow all male couples to enter competitions because all female couples can already. That would be something different.

Alas, I live in Scotland (note to self: move to Holland). My parents would never pay for me to go down south for dance lessons - I'm still trying to convince them to let me get scd tickets for this year. But all male couples sounds good, so maybe in a few years time I could try and force my boyfriend to consider it (unfortunately he's not the type, but he does have a soft spot for Anton).
Actually, thinking about it I doubt I could handle dance lessons with Ian - I'd probably try and grope him or something and get arrested for assault...

I think we have strayed off the subject of the thread here, and I sincerely hope Ian does not find his way on here. I do have to try to be discreet where he is concerned because that is the way he wants it, dont want to get into trouble for getting carried away.

yeh sorry, I was just kidding with my last comment there - I didn't mean to creep you out. And I'm sure Ian'd be very flattered (as well as frightened) if he ever came on here.
And that was my first actual conversation on here, but yeh we did go a tad off topic...

The Vincent threads are my normal stomping ground but I strayed over here just for curiosity's sake, and have been finding the conversation about Ian etc very interesting. It is such a shame Ian went out early last year because he is one of my very favourite professionals - EJ, I can completely understand how much you must admire him and want to not be indiscreet about him, because he does seem so lovely. Ian also comes across as having a very strong personality, which I suppose gives him that competitive edge. He is not only really gorgeous but appears to have real integrity as well. I think Vincent overwhelmed us all with his personality and the effervescent relationship with Louisa but if Ian was still in the competition I would have found it hard to know who I supported more, especially if he had another partner like Zoe. Sorry, this has absolutely nothing to do with dancers' heights!

I think we lost the subject some time back, got diverted you might say.

I get a bit nervous about discussing Ian on a forum, he is a very private person really except when he is on SCD. I love him to bits and he has always been very nice to me, so I would not want to do anything to spoil that.

I think Ian and Camilla and Vincent and Flavia are both doing showcases at some event up north, it could be donahayes. End of May or beginning of June. Too far away for me, but expect it will be fabulous.

It's a Donaheyes event, but residential at a hotel in Blackpool....I was reading about it somewhere last night! Alas, out of my reach as well but it sounds great doesn't it !
There are performances and workshop opportunities with both couples, and also another couple doing rock'n'roll.

Thats the one! Ian mentioned Donaheyes and also Blackpool. I expect it will be fantastic for those who can manage to go.
