well john is a little town, not many tourists come by this way

I saw a guy today on youtube, i swear to god if i hadn't known i'd have believed it was elvis.

His name was Doug Church and i was very surprised.

Having been a fan of elvis for 20 years now and having a perfect ear for music i'd never heard an impersonater worth a damn, but here is a guy who really can do elvis very well.

Obviously not a touch on the King himself, but advertised at the greatest elvis impersonater in the world and i'm thinking he may be right.

In this link http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NnAv7_rUTR4 he's singing a number of elvis hits and some others, very good.

And in this one http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h7MdW0TDYT0 imagine elvis had covered Candle in The Wind by Elton John

On repeat hearings you notice the difference, but first time round i give him 7/10

i've also noticed there's plenty of footage on youtube from the 1977 CBS special, his final concerts. Surely if it's accessible there it is about time EPE release it to the fans on a special edition DVD, nicely cleaned up with plenty of extra's?

I'm hoping that for the 30th anniversary they do this.

This is quite nice.... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fabf20R2Ahk

Its can't be denied that Elvis had stage presence, a good live performer and had millions of fans.

I've always wondered how much stuff he wrote, produced himself?

Did he write his big songs himself, or was it other peoples work, like Otis Blackwell (I think thats his name)

Elvis was not a writer, he did not strive to make artistic statements. He collaborated on most of his cover sounds and wrote at least 50 gospel songs

Quote:
“Elvis never really tried to write songs. He just didn't have the patience. He hated to sit down and do anything like that. I think he could have written songs if he'd taken the time and could sit still long enough. If he had written songs, I think Elvis would have come up with more ballads than rock and roll - he had a ballad mind and liked the ballad type songs”

Red West

He wrote a couple of songs with Red but El wanted to sing he never professed to be a writer

Elvis wasn't really a song-writer although he did have some credits to his name.

However, in the studio he took a very definite role of making sure that his records were his own. He was practially the singer/arranger/producer and mixer.

Although he was rarely credited with any of these roles he thought it important that he take charge of his recording sessions.

It's a well known fact that he took 31 takes to nail Hound Dog, because he was never satisfied until he nailed it.

All throughout his career he took control of his recording sessions, probably because of his base in Sun Records where Sam Phillips taught him the basics and allowed him creative control.

I'm not sure how good of a song writer elvis would have been, but it's fair to say that the songs he did have a hand in were quite good.

And of course because he took other peoples songs and the Colonel negotiated the publishing rights to Elvis, he made enough money without having to write them himself. Rather clever really

Greece has the advantage of not having many backward, red-neck americans in your face though!

Elvis was alright - bob dylan did far more influential songs though. I prefer Cat Stevens and Neil Young as well - Elvis is not bad, but hugely overrated.

“When I first heard Elvis' voice I just knew that I wasn’t going to work for anybody; and nobody was going to be my boss...Hearing him for the first time was like busting out of jail.”
Bob Dylan

Neil Young wrote a song about elvis in homage to him...Prairie Wind

I found this on a webpage just now...

Quote:
“Jeliel's comments on how he feels about Elvis this, or Elvis that, sounds like the reaction of the guy who interviewed Bob Dylan about nine months ago, live and on TV. He was totally surprised, his face somewhat showing all the sings of someone who is not really versed on the effect Elvis has, even today, on most of the greatest musicians in the latter half of the 20th Century.

He was trying to make Dylan say how he felt about how people in the sixties, and beyond felt about him( the fact that they saw him as the saviour, as the prohphet, whatever). Dylan told him (and the guy could not believe it..), that if he ever wanted to be someone, that that person was Elvis.

Luckily, there are smarter interviewers, like Larry King. When he asked Mc Cartney, about a year ago in his show, who was the one who had really influenced him, his favourite of all the founding fathers of rock, McCartney said it was Elvis. King knew, from way back, that Lennon considered Elvis his favourite, but he obviously was also taken aback when he heard Mc Cartney's reply, so just to be sure, he asked him again, back-to-back. That was smart.

Mc Cartney's second reply, to what essentially the same question, was equally convincing.

"He was the one, Elvis, the one I loved the most, from the start".

Now, if Lennon, McCartney and Dylan not just loved Elvis, but also wanted to be him, why a song written by Neil about Elvis be so surprising a fact for Jeliel to digest?”

Bob Dylan, a legend in his own right, wanted to BE elvis

As for Cat Stevens, I can't comment as I have never heard him speak of any other artists.

But Dylan, Lennon, McCartney and many others who I also consider legends, have all agreed that Elvis was the One, The Only, The King.

Elvis sang THOUSANDS of songs and to say that Dylan did far more influential songs isn't very fair.

Yes Dylan WROTE many influential songs, but Elvis recorded many influential songs, and not only that he did what Dylan hasn't done.....

Elvis influenced an entire generation, an generations since.

To this day Elvis is still VERY influential to people from all walks of life. Dylan too is influential to song-writers, i myself being one, BUT i don't hear many people saying Dylan is an inspiration to them or an idol or a hero.

Comparing all these legendary acts is perhaps not fair on the musicians themselves or the fans.

There will always be people who consider Elvis the King, and there will always be people who consider Lennon/McCartney or Dylan more important.

I ask the same question i ask anyone who says this......

Who inspired Dylan, Lennon, and McCartney? Funnily enough the answer is always the same
