I agree and El fans everywhere will probably disagree '(68 Special )-but the white "If I Can Dream" suit was grot also - way too formal - I loved the unplugged in the round - some of the choreographed song sketches also were Parkers idea and El looked animated in all of them - he told Sonny (West) that the Colonel insisted he did them and 'anything for a quiet life' - the in the round was the only part of the show that Elvis watched - he rarely watched himself on screen

i thought the white suit looke very good and elvis looked great

considering it was a song dedicated to the recent assasination of Martin Luther King i felt it quite appropriate

The unplugged sessions were great, elvis was looking tanned, slim, so damn good looking and his voice was very rich and suited to the "jam" style of the recording. If i could look like elvis in any way i would probably choose this period of his life

Or the way he looks in the 1970 concert film That's The Way It Is

i knew my white suit comment would be contraversial - the ethic behind it was right but as a woman the style and cut was just too stiff for Elvis he didnt look comfortable . The song though was one of the best of the year - I still get a lump in my throat when I hear it - do you have a fave?

I like so many - but some mean more if you know what I mean - Promised Land does it for me as does I Will Remember You - and all the -oh sod it theres only one I really dont like and that is (contraversial again) -Wooden Heart -the Elf ducks to avoid flying objects

Amongst other idols and influences Lennon had, and Elvis has covered more of Lennon's work than the other way round Thanks for all the positive John Lennon quotes about Elvis - the fact is, its not all great. Like I said before, the stuff after the army, Lennon pretty much dismissed....and the meeting was in many ways an anti-climax.

Also, its Lennons (and Beatles) work that is inspiring bands to this day more than any other artist in history. Wonderful that Elvis influenced John - but so did many, lets not start pinpointing The Beatles existence purely down to Elvis, as otherwise we could get down to a level of "well if it wasn't for Maccas mum giving birth....the Beatles never would have existed"!

From the lyrics of a Public Enemy song and sampled by PWEI

'Elvis was a hero to most but never meant s**t to me'

what a great lyric and so true.

oh and it's not me who said there would have been no beatles, it was your main man John Lennon himself and if you actually READ the meeting between elvis and the beatles from their own words, it was anything but an anticlimax.

yes elvis was a little off with them at first, but they immensely enjoyed meeting him and were in awe the whole time, and they got to jam with their idol, how many get to do that?

Perhaps you should read up on the facts before you start to type, i don't mind people having an opinion, it's the only fair way to be, but at least get it right because people read these things other than you or i and they will leave here believing the rubbish

Elvis was alway wary of them though, as he knew they would totally hog the limelight, as they were producing pop songs he couldn't match.

He was also anti-drugs, and as Macca said after his death that he found it strange that he was so anti-drugs, yet was found dead full of them.

The Beatles, by the time of their meeting, were far more into the music of Bob Dylan, and were even "guided" into drugs by him (not always a positive influence!), Elvis was a thing of the past, they knew that when they met him.

Again your facts are not very accurate.

Yes elvis died full of drugs, they were prescription drugs and yes he abused them and this led to his death and downfall, i can't deny that it's a FACT.

He was anti-drugs in the sense of cocaine, heroin, LSD, weed etc.

Elvis did try a few of these drugs in the 60's and so he wasn't just anti them for no reason, he tried them to experiment as many people have done and decided they weren't for him.

And the beatles were in on way let down by their meeting of elvis, once again you just type with your fingers without checking the facts. You are on the internet, read it up for yourself. And if elvis was a "thing of the past" and john had no time for him after he joined the army, then was were john lennon and george harrison at his sell out Madison Square Garden concerts in 1972?

Again your argument is based on pure rubbish that you have just made up and if you can't get your facts right then please just don't say anything.

Better to keep your mouth shut and be thought an idiot than to open it and remove all possible doubt

Oh dear johnny boy, getting a little hot under the collar are you???

You seem to place an awful lot of importance on what The Beatles thought of Elvis. So you condone him experimenting on recreational drugs, yet say its ok to addiction to prescription ones...and die on them???

Facts do not allow me to get hot under the collar

I did not condone him experimenting on recreational drugs, i said he experimented with them as many millions of people do, it's human nature. I did not say that i agreed with it. Again please READ these posts properly

Addiction to prescription drugs is not a new thing and it is still a very big problem today. It is very likely that someone you know has an addiction to prescription drugs for some medical purpose, they may not know it tho.

Everyone around elvis knew of his addiction but how do you tell a man like that "no"? Two of his former friends/bodyguards/employee's released a book close to his death about his addiction to prescription drugs to try and open his eyes to it. It obviously didn't work.

At the time of Elvis' addictions there were no betty ford clinics, there were no rehab clinics of any kind.

And to be perfectly honest i don't care what the beatles thought of elvis, i KNOW what the beatles thought of elvis as unlike yourself i have read and paid attention to many interviews they have given and therefore anything i offer here is fact.

You are just someone who opens your mouth firing off your own beliefs hoping to convert the masses.

I think this debate is rather boring now and it's time to get back to an elvis orientated thread. You may have noticed in the beatles one that i continue to keep it to topic although you are fighting many corners with many people, i would appreciate it if you would do the same here

You cherry picked Beatles quotes to suit your argument. All I ever said was that Elvis wasn't the only influence on them, and that they actually mocked him at times. Most of their work was original and sounded nothing like Elvis, and the stuff they covered were usually rock standards by Chuck Berry, Carl Perkins etc.

please can we - as john-stirling suggests - keep this thread to discuss Elvis and lets keep the Beatles thread for them - this thread was started to enable beatles thread to get away from the elvis/beatles who is better/bigger/more talented posts and yet you continue to bring it here -

If you actually READ the pages you will notice there are many things i COULD have used in my argument, i just chose the ones that related directly to elvis in quote.

Please go here http://features.absoluteelsewhere.ne...s_meeting.html and read about john lennons OWN WORDS about meeting elvis. I'm sure as a beatles fan you will have some interest in this.

Then i would suggest you come here http://www.elvispresleynews.com/Beatles.html and read in THEIR own words about the day they met elvis. Again any beatles fan worth his salt wouldn't or rather couldn't not look here

Now back to topic.....

I would hope that a box set of every elvis film could be released soon, from Love Me Tender right up to and including Elvis in Concert (plus all the concert films etc)

I read about a box set coming out (http://dvd.elvis.com/index.php?ref=elvis_homevid) but it only includes certain choice picks of films, again EPE trying to keep the "image" intact. I'll probably still buy it tho as there's a lot of very good bonus things added

When will they learn that the true fans want the true elvis? all of him, not just select pieces that we have seen a dozen times. When i was about 7 i saw the film This is Elvis for the first time, and at the end is footage of Elvis in Concert, surely if it's available to see, (and plenty on youtube) then there is no need to keep it hidden still.

Everyone knows what elvis looked like in the last years of his life, the fans still love him and never left his side.

Ha, thats not difficult. The Beatles were better, bigger AND more talented!

Sgt Peppers was recently voted the most influential album ever made, their "big 5" albums pretty much are guaranteed a place in the elite album lists. They've sold far more records than Elvis (therefore are "bigger"), even since 1991 - only Garth Brookes has sold more than the Beatles in America, Elvis is well down the list, and as for talent....well the fab four wrote every single they ever officially released in Britain, they wrote pretty much most of their catalogue and could play so many different instruments.

please if you're going to put such ridiculous facts on the table at least back them up with some evidence, something i can read and make up my own mind about.

As far as i know not even the record companies know how many singles or albums the beatles and elvis have sold, they always just quote a billion.

Please backup what you say or keep it to yourself Anyone can just "makeup" their own facts

I always wait till someone asks before I bother boring them with links, plus it makes their position weaker when I actually produce a link!

http://www.citynews.ca/news/news_8521.aspx

Rolling Stone Magazine and Time Magazine also put The Beatles as the best artist/best entertainers of all time. The RIAA also giving the Beatles the award of biggest selling artist of the 20th Century back in 1999.

As for the record sales, I think the record companys just say "1 billion", to stop fans bickering. In reality, I doubt either have sold that amount. The Beatles have OFFICIALLY sold minimum 170m (169m but awaiting "Love" certs) albums in America, by far the largest market in the world. Elvis has sold 118.5m - again, America is where he sold most of his records. You know RIAA's link most likely.

Whatever happens, the Beatles legacy of music will always be superior to Elvis. Just look at the thousands of music polls every month that put The fab four topping so many of them. Lets also not forget that The Beatles are shifting millions more records these days than Elvis.

what was the first elvis song you ever heard?

Mine was Almost in Love from the album of the same name that was made up of mostly movie songs.

It was on an old cassette tape and the first time i heard that voice, "your lips were made, for kisses so tender...." WOW

I was instantly hooked, hearing that voice was like hearing God, it just felt so right and i've been a fan ever since.

Not the obvious song choice but it was the first i'd ever heard

Maybe if i'd heard hound dog or teddy bear i wouldn't have been a fan

the only good thing Elvis did was influence John Lennon to pick up a guitar.

Elvis was the original Pop Idol - never wrote a note, a front for a product that sold millions and made everyone involved a lot of dosh.
