That'll be down to Tiscali dropping 4Mbit broadband and just offering 2Mbit or max speed. Max speed now costs £3 more than 2Mbit. I've upgraded and I seem to get up to 5Mbit when the TV is off, or 3Mbit when on.

Are these speeds typical?

Depends entirely on how far you are from the exchange and quality of wiring between you and them...

I get roughly the same Zapomatic... 5.5mbit down/512KB up with the TV off and 3.5Mbit down/512KB up with the TV on. My friend who is on the 2Meg gets 2Mbit with the TV off and 1Mbit whe the the TV is on but he only gets 300KB Up whether the TV is on or off.

Well I am thinking of going for the max speed pack. Did anyone have any problems and did they do it instantly.

Actually I have been impressed in these early days of Tiscali as the TV picture has definately improved (it is still on the soft side but tends to have greater definition, crowds at football tend to look more realistic and hardly any picture glitches) and my 2meg speed seems as good as always.

Any thoughts?

Cant say Iv'e noticed any difference in picture quality, though I have a basic TV anyway. The internet seems excellent as usual.

I think they did it midnight the day after I spoke to them (though it was a while ago now) - so not instant, but no real delay...

They did mine instantly at last night but said it would be at least 3 days to increase

your friend could have a problem if his only geting 1 meg on a 2meg with the tv on. the tv side of it use's 3meg so if your line can take 4.5 or above he should still get at least 1.5meg-2meg with tv off.
mine never changed on a 2meg servis i alway got the full 2meg my 4meg would drop to about 3meg at the moment i'm geting 4.2meg down but my up speed is still the same have to wait and see this could be due to my line have a few probs with it at the moment

Well mine has been done but the speed on one speedchecker site is just 3.3, 4.3 on another site. Can someone recommend me a reliable test site.

TIA

http://www.speedtest.bbmax.co.uk/

ftp://www.homehoice.co.uk/test100mb.dat
ftp://www.homehoice.co.uk/test10mb.dat

no username/password

these are files located on HC's server (within HC's network) - so they say they should represent the fastest possible speed you can achieve

Thanks MBear. For me both the Homechoice tests fail and the other test gives a download of 4351,4371 and 4373 but hangs when testing the upload speed.

Doesn't sound right to me. Tiscali wont do anything today as they say that they still may be working on the line and the job is still live until midnight tonight

Try ftp://www.homehoice.co.uk/

Then you should get an explorer folder up (if on IE) with those two files listed. Then try downloading one of them.

Does it work?

Try searching for an FTP client in Google - there are loads available for free

You'll have to spell "homechoice" correctly for the link to work
