I'm looking to move to Orange pay monthly for a 12 month contract on Dolphin £25. I want a Sony Ericsson phone, particularly looking at camera, FM radio and MP3 playback. Interested in using it with gmail e-mail and doing a bit of mobile internet. What do you suggest?

W850i is a great phone, I have that and the K800i and would choose the 850 everytime, the radio is really clear, RDS etc camera is well, a camera on a phone, MP3 is pretty good. The earphones are the most comfortable I have used, WAY better than an ipods.

I have used it for internet as well, you can make it landscape or portrait for viewing sites and can have the slide open or closed too. It doesnt pick up scratches or dings easily mine gets used and abused and still looks as new.

The only downside is it takes the memory stick duo, but when I got mine off orange they gave a free 1gig card

The head phones come in 2 pieces so if you plug it in without the earphone part you can use the external speaker to listen to the radio on.sson_w850i_reviews.ht

orange are also doing the W880i free now as well.

Got a mate who had a 950i one with the 4gig drive on it? and said it was rubbish?

As I say they are in very poor low light, the room is dark is its a very dull rainy day and the ceiling light shade is dark coloured

The 850i's flash is a standard light like nokia's have but the k800i has a proper xenon flash, the radio on the 800i is iffy always seems to have a buzzing noise on it and the earphones that come with it are the bulky ipod type

Have you had orange contract before mate? cos the orange software sucks balls, better if you can get somewhere where that will give the phone with generic software tbh and the phone wont have orange branding on it.

I've just got a K800i and I'm using Opera Mini for web pages and Gmail's own application for checking emails. All works great, and I have to say Gmail's application is a lot faster than checking via the normal WAP interface. It works and looks pretty much the same as the real thing on your computer.

To download point your WAP browser to: http://www.googlemail.com/app and http://mini.opera.com.

I would also recommend that you don't get this phone on Orange

Don't know what the 850i would be like at gigs. I used mine to video a small gig yesterday and the picture's quite good but the sound is horrible. However the sound really was horrible on the night so I can't complain.

I tried taking a still photo in the garden the other day and it was horribly out-of-focus. Not sure why. The zoom is digital so it can only be used in VGA mode, presumably taking a picture in 2 megapixel mode and then "zooming" in Photoshop would be a better option.

The Sony Ericsson W880i is a good phone. Not sure if available on orange, got mine on 02. The camera is quiet good though zoom is only used in VGA mode. Mine come with a 1gb m2 memory stick so you can store lots of music and photos on it. The software is good too with the song2disk program which upload songs to the phone being very useful. The only downside for you is that it has no FM radio on it but I found that the FM radio on my old K750i was rubbish anyway. Google Mail works fine on it too.
