Digihome PVR80 Hard Disk Failure?

Has anyone had a disk fail in their PVR80, and moreover replaced it to get it working? My PVR80 seems to fail on the Disk Check Routine, says "DISK CHECK" then goes straight into standby. On the rare occasions that it does start, however, it will display for only a few seconds. Then on the next power cycle it will fail the Disk Check routine again? I'm assuming the HDD has failed, but it'd be good if someone could confirm this?

I've lent my PVR80 out so I can't check but I'm sure it has a "Format" command somewhere. Next time it fires up ok, I'd be inclined to try that - you'll lose your recordings but, if it fails, you'll lose them anyway.

If I remember correctly, you can force it to do a format by holding the OK button on the box itslef while you restore mains power to the box.

Digifusion PVRs use Maxtor hard drives and many are revived by using the Maxtor disc utility program Powermax. Have a look at http://technonotice1.googlepages.com/powermax.html

Whatever disks the Digihome's use, I'm sure there will be a PowerMax equivalent for it. Worth a try.

I'm sure I could make out a "Samsung" Disk in there just by looking through the vents?

Digihome's tend to be fitted with Samsung SpinPoint drives, the PVR80 at least - probably because Samsung is part of the Vestel group, unless I misread the turkish site

Sounds like a HDD failure is the likely cause, although hard to tell without putting the drive in a PC and running some diagnostics tool. If you are willing to hook the drive up to a PC, try http://www.samsung.com/Products/Hard...ties/hutil.htm and/or any freeware tool which can read and display the drive's SMART status may help, assuming SMART is available and enabled on the PVR drive. I would hope the Digihome software does actually monitor the drive's SMART status so it knows when the drive is starting to fail, which might be why the disk check fails - then again, the drive might just be knackered
