Now - The Carpenters. It was the last song Karen ever recorded beofre she died . And one of her best, it is achingly beautiful.

Catcher In The Rye - Guns N' Roses

(this is an unreleased track for the forthcoming album " chiense democracy", its about john lennons death and the last verse brings a tear to my eye)

listen to the 1999 Demo here

http://youtube.com/watch?v=8oTMj10V3TM

here are the lyrics

Aah, aah…
When all is said and done we’re not the only ones
Who look at life this way that’s what the old folks say

But everytime I’d see them makes me wish I had a gun
If I thought that I was crazy well I guess I’d have more fun
Guess I’d have more fun

Ooh…the catcher in the rye again
Ooh…Won’t let you get away from him
It’s just another day like today

You decide, if I don’t have to
Then they’ll find, and I won’t ask you
If I am in time, or long thereafter
If we’re cold outside, I’ll be wrapped up into me (?), oh oh

Na na na na (etc)

Ooh…the catcher in the rye again
Ooh…Won’t let you get away from him
It’s just another day like today

When all is said and done we’re not the only ones
Who look at life this way that’s what the young folks say

And if they’d ever change, as time went by the same
But everytime I’d see them makes me wish I had a gun
If I thought that I was crazy well I guess I’d have more fun
Cause what used to be is not there for me and all too far someone that’s gone insane, like I do

Woah no Na na na

On an ordinary day, back in an ordinary way
All at once the song I heard, no longer would it play
For anybody, or anyone
That needed comfort from some god and me…I need comfort from someone
Who cared, to be, not like you and unlike me
And then the voice just went away, from me
So that it set the wheels in motion to alter memories
You were the instrument, you were young, how about it, talk about it
Gave that boy a gun
Took my innocence, beyond my scabs, sometimes we own it then we got it oh… can’ t you tell

Ahh ahh na na

Concrete Angel - Martina McBride, Which is about Child abuse.

Winter - Tori Amos, Which is an empowering song about having self-esteem.

I have, and Eva Cassidy's arrangement/performance is in a league of its own. She also cuts out the reference to, err, sex in the fields - which I think helps to make Eva's version more poignant, also more widely popular I think.

Yep, Eva's Fields of Gold is the one
