Help required with modulator/dvd
Just joined this forum to seek some help.
Trying to obtain a colour picture on DVD's - only getting black and white. The DVD player is fine when connected scart to scart on a different TV so the player and scart leads appear fine. TV in one room has no scart plug and I read that you need a modulator. I have bought one and connected it up but still only get black and white picture. The DVD is playing OK so I must have the modulator set to the right channel. Any thoughts as to what I am doing wrong? There was a video player in the loop that i thought might be the problem but still the same with that disconnected. TV is a Tatung TN8904, DVD is Alba DVD73, modulator is VH89W. Aerial connection being amplified through a SLX 1P. |

Are there any settings on the DVD player to change the type of video output on the scart connection? Alternatively try to connect to the modulator using the Composite (RCA yellow) and Audio connections (RCA Red/white). If you still can't get colour then the modulator could be faulty.

I am just guessing as never tried to connect a DVD in this way still as no one else has suggested anything*- What video format is the DVD outputting. There should be menu with settings like RGB - Composite or CVBS etc. Try changing them if you can find them. Perhaps only the most basic setting will work. Richard *Edit well they hadn't when I started typing Looks like soulboy beat me to it.

Check your DVD player. I am willing to bet a guaranteed jackpot winning lottery ticket
that it is set to S-Video and the modulator is expecting a Composite input. This is quite likely since you get colour on a TV set using the same set-up. S-Video over SCART is a bit of a bodge. As originally designed there was only really provision for Composite and RGB with no spare pins available for S-Video. So when you switch a device to S-Video it has to "nick" a couple of pins on the SCART that were originally intended for other purposes. In this case S-Video uses the Composite Video pin and one of the RGB pins. S-Video splits the video signal into two components, black & white and colour. The black & white component gets fed down the Composite video pin. So if the source (ie your DVD) is set to S-Video and the destination (ie the modulator or a TV) is set to Composite then you get a black and white picture. On the DVD Composite may also be called CVBS, PAL or just Video. Give that a try and see if that cures the problem. |

Unfortunately my daughter doesn't have the manual or handset for the DVD player (handed on from a friend!).
Have been unable to find how to change the settings as described - many thanks for trying to help - looked for a dvd73 manual on line but couldn't find one - probably not much use without the handset in any case |
