Best tariff for low usage

I've been using the same phone on Vodafone pay as you talk for about three years so I'd like to get a new one. I've had a Vodafone contract for ten years but my wife uses the phone as she makes more calls than me.

Would it be best to try getting a new contract with another company (O2?) and get a free phone that way? There's no benefit to being on Vodafone as far as I can see, the only way to get free calls to family members is to pay an extra £5 for Vodafone Family - might as well put the fiver towards a contract that gets me a better phone.

Any thoughts?

i've just changed from orange - none of their current plans suited me after my 18mth contract finished (£19 p/mth 120 mins & 30 txts with a samsung D500), to t-mobile - £20 p/mth for 18mth, £34 worth of useage per month (calls, txt, mms).

loads of free phones are available on this plan with t-mobile but the one i chose, samsung D840, was £20.

i found these sites very useful when i was searching.

Hi
The cheapest I know to is with t-mobile@£15.
However I would be able to do you a Voda deal @£18 including family if your wife was happy to get it on her same account. It would also include a fairly decent phone.

Those deals from 3 look good. I also found a 750 minutes anytime any network, plus 150 texts for £17.50 a month.

I'm currently on an ancient orange package - 60 minutes for £17 a month, bill is normally for £30

Think I'm going to 3

True... thanks to all for the advice but I asked them politely and got a nice phone from Vodafone.

An update - although I expect no-one cares...

I spoke to orange, and asked for my PAC (?) code, to take my number to 3.

They offered me 500 anytime, any network minutes, 150 texts, and free landlines calls for £15 a month. Plus a new W850i

That's nice if it suits, but bare in mind they often offer something that is not entirely appropriate for your usage.

for instance if your usage pattern is 200 minutes and 500 texts then they know you're not going to use half your minutes and will be spending an extra 35 quid a month on texts.

I thought that they might try and do something like that, so I asked them what my average usage per month was, and they was able to tell me based on a six month average. So it all fits in nicely

Does anyone know why you they said I needed a new sim card for the new phone? Have sim cards changed over the last few years?
