Anyone see Sonny on Loose Women?

Hey,
I've just seen yesterdays Loose Women and Sonny from Corrie was a guest on the show. Was it just me or did he come across really badly? To me he seemed quite homophobic and full of himself. He talked about how he and the producer had decided that Sonny and Sean would never be seen kissing because "if they were seen kissing, it would be seen as a cheap thrill" I mean we're in 2007, nearly 20 years since the first soap gay kiss with Anna Friel and Nichola Stephenson and there has been plenty since, so why would it come across as a cheap thrill.

He went on to say that if the Producers asked him back to play Sean's boyfriend he'd turn it down as it would be boring. Surely its the stories surrounding the character that make him interesting. His partner in the show wouldn't be what defined him and he said he would never agree to kiss another man in a programme as there would never be a need for it.

God, this sounds like a rant now, so I'll stop. I just wondered if anyone else noticed it.

I saw him on This Morning a couple of weeks ago - and I agree with you. He came across as very uncomfortable with his character's sexuality, and (like you say) incredibly full of himself. He made a lot of dodgy comments, as well as eluding that it was his involvement that made them tone down the kiss to the point that the actors didn't actually even touch lips. Didn't come across well.

Hmn, that sounds like a pretty pathetic excuse to me! I would have thought that actually seeing Sean and Sonny kissing would be a necessity to the script seeing as Steve caught them. You'd think that we, as the audience, would see it from Steve's point of view.

Besides, they've already featured men kissing on Corrie before. We had Todd kissing Nick back in 2003, and then two kisses between Todd and Karl in 2004. I thought that Corrie was moving forward in their representation of gay characters but now it seems that they have taken several steps backwards!

I didn't see Loose Women but, from what you've said, it certainly sounds as if Pal Aron didn't come across very well Never mind though, Sonny is a rubbish character so I won't be crying if he doesn't come back!

That was exactly what I thought yesterday, that he seemed homophobic.
It put me right off him, not that I rated him much in the first place!!

I think the actor is bi himself as I read in an interview with him that he said he finds Prince very attractive, despite being married with a child.

For someone who is homophobic, he seems to like playing gay characters!

That is a big conclusion to jump to!

Just because someone can see the attraction in someone else of the same sex, it doesn't mean they are gay or bi!

Some people cant tell the difference between fantasy and reality it seems.

He didn't say he was good looking or anything - he said he actually felt an attraction!

I hate him ever since he said Coronation Street was the only heavyweight soap on TV. The stuck up bastard.

The actor played a gay character in Casualty for a couple of years, maybe more?

I just thought it was odd that in his opinion it would be a chep thrill. He certainly had no problem kissing Kym Ryder. I doubt it would have stirred any publicity at all. They've done the whole controversial kiss with Todd and Karl. Nobody would have batted an eyelid. I'm mean even Neighbours had a lkesbian kiss last week and nobody mentioned it. Why is he so bothered?

That's a bit strong. How can you hate someone you don't know? It seems he just has a different opinion to you which hardly seems to justify hatred! Boring world if we all liked the same things.

I don't like it when he doesn't acknowledge other soaps.
Coronation Street actors are always dissing other soaps, and it really turns me off them.

I haven't seen any of the interviews but I don't think that he is hmophobic.
It must be pretty disconcerting to ask to play a gay character when your straight and then for the nation to see you kissing.

But why is it any more disconcerting than say playing a serial killer and the nation watching you murder someone? I don't understand why people make out that this is somehow different...

It's called acting. Pretending to be what you aren't.

As people have said in the past, I bet he'd (or any straight actor) have no trouble playing a rapist or a murderer, cos he'd just say it was acting and he's probably enjoy the challenge. It's what they usually say.

It may have been the attention 'outside' of playing the part he was uncomfortable with. If he is straight (and I don't know if he is or isn't) a lot of gay attention all of a sudden might just have thrown him a bit. Corrie has a large gay following. Some people do not believe it when an actor say's they are straight because the industry isn't known for it's straight males...they think he's hiding gay tendancies.

lol! I saw your post just after I posted mine!

Exactly. Couldn't agree more. It's like when people ask an actor whose playing a gay character if he's gay. They always do. But they never asked Brian Capron (Richard Hillman) - for instance - if he went round killing people, cos they knew he was just playing a role!

It's because it's sex related. Kissing is foreplay...it's real you do actually have to touch that person sexually. The violence is fake.

Most films will let violence through at with a 15 certificate but if there is sex involved it's automatically upped to 18.

People get crushes on characters and always wonder what their sexuality is at some point.

I agree with you and kissing is a very intimate thing to do.

People will wonder about the sexuality of an actor regardless of the character they play. I'm sure plenty of gay actors play straight characters in soaps.

Okay so the kissing is a bit more real than the violence. But that's the case regardless of the gender of the other person. Mr Aron is perfectly happy to get "intimate" with a woman who he isn't really attracted to but seems less keen with a man he's not attracted to.
