Not all of it was good - I've just remembered the idiot that was Daniel Beddingfield doing a Masterclass and totally ignoring poor Alistair and keep on and on about how great Alex was

I think the discussion is about both series not just FA1, although most posters seem to have preferred FA1. I thoroughly enjoyed them both. A previous poster asked what had happened to Alistair... he's now fronting a band called Albion and they are currently writing and recording. He does occasional solo acoustic appearances and recently wrote a clever comedy football song dedicated to Mark Viduka to the tune of Leonard Cohen's Hallelujah. He performed it at a gig at the Riverside for a laugh and Gareth Southgate was so taken with it he asked Alistair to record it so that they could play it to Mark Viduka. He's currently in negotiations with Leonard Cohen's publishers to make it available for download as a charity single for the Macmillan Charity Trust. There are links to both Albion's and his own myspace sites in the FA2 thread.

Thank you for telling me this.

I loved Fame Academy and was gutted when the beeb scrapped it, for me the whole format of the show was superior to that of Pop Idol and X Factor - I liked the songwriting workshops, the fitness and dance routines and the way they were prepared for any subsequent fame.

Even if you can disregard all of the above, how on earth could they bin the show that gave us lawn darts?

Bring back Fame Academy!

I loved Fame Academy and would love to see it back but I got sooo fed up with the judges! What is wrong with constructive criticism and maybe even a bit of praise occasionally rather than just pure nastyness?

I was a massive fan of Fame Academy and always rated it much higher than Pop Idol and the rest that followed. Such fond memories, pure class.

Going by what we are all saying.......
Everyone has such fond memorys of FA1
It is so hard to believe that the BBC didn't keep to that format for FA2 as well and in the end scraped it!!

James and Pete?

As much as I loved FA1 and FA2 it was no different to Pop Idol, X Factor and any other reality show where the viewers choose the winner and I can understand why it was scrapped. Let's be fair Lemar was head and shoulders above any of the other contestants but still didn't win it because the public voted on the "fun" antics of others in the house!

Oh I remember Mariah. Picky picky picky she was, and then mimed on the actual show

I was an addict to both shows. I'd love it to come back. They could introduce musicians & singers both competing to make it a bit different. I'd watch

Daniel Beddingfield freaked me out during his performance with Alex. I remember he literally undresses her with his eyes and is overly suggestive to her. ewww. She really hates it, wants to smack him one and doesn't look at him after. I really think that happened - or did I have too many shandies that night

Anyone got it please? love to see it again.

The thing about Lemar though was that he was already the finished article at the beginning. He was so much better than the others that initially when I started watching it I thought he was one of the tutors. I think viewers like to see someone learn and improve during the time. David Sneddon was 100/1 outsider when he first went in the house, but he turned it around with his dedication and the way he connected with the audience (Don't let the Sun Go Down on Me won it for him IMO)

Whether the best person wins or not is immaterial really - Lemar has had a fantastic career since - just shows that cream rises to the top in the end

I think we already have a show for nobodies without talent winning and that's Big Brother. My impression from watching both FAs was that they were looking for a rough diamond who they could give a break. Lemar was by far that person in FA1 and although David Sneddon was vastly improved, time has shown that away from the reality format he's been forgotten by the vast amount of people who voted for him! I can remember at the time "arguing" with friends about how good Lemar was and listening to the same argument as you have just given.. Interestingly enough a few years later the group were at one of our houses and the Lemar CD was being played, we all then spent around 30 mins trying to remember the people who beat him in the final.

I know what you are saying. But what was so different was that, for me anyway......... I actually cared about the people in FA1. In FA2 it was too commercialised for me. too much outside interference and they knew exactly what was going on outside the academy at all times and too much playing to the camera, it was too big brother attitude ..
In FA1 Watching them trying to nail a song... the jamming, writing songs, helping each other to learn their songs. The late nights practicing in front of the mirror....... The way they took advice on and listened to the tutors.
No other reality show had me sat there for hours watching Maria Carie aim for perfection whilst recording and not being bored with it all.......
I loved all the master classes and the advice given was real and not rehearsed as it seemed to be in FA2.
I know why they axed FA2....... it wasn't a patch on FA1.
IMO they should have just stuck to the same format as FA1 and they would have had the best formated show going, for us the viewer to watch.
There were flaws like Lemar being the fav from the beginning. But they were right about him. He is still around, and I am no big Lemar fan.........
My only beef with him at the time, wasn't his talent, it was that he had had a record out previously and connections with the record company

Spot on CPA. FA2 wasn't a patch on the first series. It needed Shepperton.

Lemar was so much the tutor's favourite and so far ahead that you sort of rooted for the underdog. ( I didn't realise his Mother was dying of cancer during his time in the Academy.) Mind Sinead's brother was suffering from a rare illness as well.

Remember Mr Partridge and his detective work on the Lemar Conspiracy?

But I agree. It was the last RTV show where I actually voted or cared about the people in there.

I only watched a couple of the shows and the final of FA1 but I was glued to FA2. My favourites were Pete (who I'm still in touch with), Alistair and Barry. I believe the main reason that none of the students even the winners had as much success as contestants from the ITV equivalents was that they didn't have the backing/promotion afforded by the Simon Cowell machine. Only Lemar has really and isn't he with Sony BMG ?

Judging by the mediocre ratings the celeb version is getting this time round (4 million) I daresay there won't even be another one of those, let alone a normal series.

I've just read this thread through, smiling and sighing, and remembering. For me too, FA1, and to a certain extent, FA2, are the best reality tv shows I've ever watched. I was completely hooked on the first series, and watched every possible second I could. I bought the book, the video, and the two cds afterwards too. I absolutely loved everything about it. I still have the video you did me too tally, after my machine chewed my own one up, and you kindly offered to do me another one. It was my first introduction to internet forums, and I had such enjoyment posting, and making new friends, and I fondly remember mister partridge amongst others who have sadly moved on elsewhere. I'd absolutely love this programme to be put back on our screens, it's so upsetting to think of what has gone before, and what could be entertaining us again.

I love this thread. I thought FA was great and my only criticism was that the teachers were the judges, they should have been totally independant. Remeber their nights out to premiers and the busking and the cereal fights? Ahhh getting all nostalgic now

Yes Tally. I remember Mr Partridge .......
And yes! series 2 needed Sheperton, or at least an outside venue for the live shows.
Doesn't it just say something though, that people like, you, flicker, me, and a few others, smile fondly remembering that first series of FA1?
Unheard of eh?
A reality show that the viewer thinks of, and feels good about it, and not twisted up with hatred for one single contestant LOL
Viewing figures may have been lower, but it wasn't advertised as well as some other reality shows. I for one stumbled across it........

I also didn't know Lemars mother was so ill at the time..... mind you neither did I with my daughter.....
