No - she was by far the best interpreter of a song and had the voice to back it up. Kim had a singing by numbers kit issued every day by David and the Eastenders audience behind her. As Carrie said people don't buy perfect singers they buy ones who make them feel emotions.

Colin isn't really Kim or Edith. he hasn't got Kim's impact and doesn't produce the money moments if you point in him in the right direction. Unlike Edith, he also seems to be going through the motions and neither connects to the songwriter's meaning or adds his own.

A wee tangent...........

I don't remember 'Edith' or 'Kim'............were they on the same show as Ruby Wax or a different one ?..........I watched some the of the Ruby series............has there been another one as well, or is it just my memory going ?

Edith was on the show 2 years ago, Ruby 4 years ago.

I really like colin but dont think his dry irony or sarcasm really come across on this kind of show.

Hes also being really defensive and comes across as the kind of person who will play the clown rather than really let people get to know him.

He didnt sound as if he expected to win , on the radio a few weeks ago, Im not really sure why he decided to enter, as with his evening show hed moved away from his crazy daytime presenter personna into a more adult thoughtful one.....

Anyone who does well at these things (celebrity dancing, singing, skating) generally has some 'talent' and is established with viewers. So sure Edith would have had the 'Radio 1' vote, but Kim had the 'Eastenders' vote.... At the end of the day it is impossible to know exactly how many people voted because they like the personality and how many voted because they think the person deserves to win. Generally I've found supporters of one 'celebrity' tend to assume that all (or most) of the votes for anyone who is beating their favourite are 'fan base' votes.... much like the post above.

I had to laugh at Veri backing up his/her argument by linking to a post written somewhere else saying the same thing!! Would have been more effective in my view if Veri hadn't also been the author of the other post!! Or are we meant to think "Well, if Veri believed it before and Veri believes it now it must be true!!!"

personally I think there is a difference to the support an actor/actress might get and the support someone like Colin gets. Colin is famous for being 'himself' on radio so I think people who are fans of his are going to be more loyal.
Kim's fame comes from playing a character .. and there are fewer actors/actresses who transcend that I think in soaps etc .. (for example, one who would get more personal fans would be the guy who played Alfie Moon can't remember his name off the top of my head). so people didn't 'know' Kim Metcalf before FA ... only her appearance/voice/not 'her'

Having said that, this is initial support but I'm sure it changes after a week into the competition.

Well, I'm not a soap watcher so can't say for sure if you're right or not about how fans view the actors. However, I would say that soap stars generally do very well on these type of talent/popularity contests. I think in general your profile before the competition (regardless of whether it's from being in a soap or a national radio show or famous footballer) begins is a good indicator of how long you'll hang around. Particularly if eliminations begin early on.

Me too! I definitely think Kim should have won last time, but Edith was a least a good singer - Colin is nowhere near as good.

I didn't post an argument in this thread and didn't want to repeat a bunch of old points; hence the link.

N.B. My argument isn't that Edith had the Radio 1 vote and Kim had the Eastenders vote as some kind of equivalent thing. That's the point of view I argued against.

Same, I found him ignorant on the first night when he didn't want to mix with the girls when the others did.

He was my favourite to win last week, and last week I hated the woman that is TPT but she is now my joint favourite with Tricia.

I genuinely love Colin, he is my joint favourite along with Tricia. He could do with remembering he does not have the best singing voice in there, though. I think deep down inside he knows this - it's just his desire to win is made worse by the fact that his ex- presenting partner won the last one, and that he wants to prove himself to Richard Park. I don't think he's particularly smug or arrogant - I just don't think his sense of humour or the dry irony that he uses a lot of really comes across too well on the streaming/live shows. Still, he's never been in the bottom three (plenty of time yet......)

I realise what you were arguing - and I was disagreeing with you. Because I do believe they are equivalent.

And you posted the link to your old post as an 'example' following your position that 'she won because of the radio 1 connection'. I thought it was funny that you felt your previous discussions on the topic represented some sort of expert opinion. Still do.

If you were trying to say - 'here is where the debate on the advantage of an existing fan base has previously taken place' then no - you didn't say it very well. And it wasn't obvious.

But no need to sigh. We all get it wrong sometimes.

Bearing in mind that the editors of the show can skew things how they want it is obvious now that we are being induced to believe that Colin is becoming a bit unbearable behind the scenes. Since his "live" persona would tend to to back up these behind the scene revelations I tend to believe what I am being shown in the edited highlights of life with the students.

Sooner he is gone the better.

His talking is legendry ...... apparently he got chucked out of school three months before his GCSE's for ............. talking too much in class. See it's not put on, it's natural.


I think Col is lovely.

I like Colin but I am beginning to dislike some of his performances.... what on earth made him think that he could sing Love and marriage ... what a stupid song. and he looked wrong.

i thought he was meant to be a musical expert, as a DJ ,...

but singing a song like that didnt reinforce that idea at all. On the radio he sings best in parody... not like tonights straight copy of a bad song sung badly.

He's doing everything strangely wrong. Edith never told anyone how to do anything despite the judges and coaches telling her she could sing professionally. When they did swing last time the coaches both noted that she understood swing and it turned out she had grown up listening to it. Colin tonight was talking about how he didn't know about old crooners. Its the great question - why is it the people who know a little who take it upon themselves to tell everyone else how to do things when its actually the ones who don't jump in who often are far better informed?
