O2 at the end of a contract?
Sorry to start up a new thread about O2.
I am pretty new to mobile phones, I got my first one last year and I am coming to the end of my year contract. I was chatting to one of my friends earlier and she told me that after the years contract is over some companies allow you to keep the phone. She also said you can resubscribe to O2 or to another phone company using the same mobile and that you can either go on pay as you go or return to monthly subscription. I thought at the end of the year you packed up your phone and sent it back to O2. I was just wondering what is the usual policy when the years contract comes to an end. Thanks! |

No you don't send the phone back and you can either cancel or upgrade your contract and get a newer phone depending on your current deal.

You keep the phone. After 11 or 17 months depending what length of contract you have you can upgrade you phone to a new one but this will commit you to another 12 or 18 month contract. Other options are to keep the phone and just continue on the tariff you have or at the end you can switch to pay as you go.

Just remember when you take out a new contract WITH mobile phone, you always pay more, because you are having a mobile phone, compared to just going on a Sim Only Tariff.
When your contract is up, move to a sim only tariff. This way you dont keep on paying for the premium of having the phone |

Thank you to everyone taking the time to answer my questions. You have all given me something to think about - I would have been lost other wise.
![]() I will look at pay as you go and sim tariff. I am not going to buy a new mobile phone or upgrade unless something drastic happens to my mobile, its got all the mod cons like itunes, camera etc and to be honest I don't use half off the stuff. As long as I can use the phone to contact people then I am quite happy. |

O2 also offer you free credit instead of a new phone when you upgrade.
I spend around £35-40 per month and was offered various brand new phones or £100 credit last year when I upgraded. I took the phone but the £100 would've covered my next 3 months payments. Plus upgrading might get you a better tariff. I used to get 200mins and 50 texts per month, now I'm on 600mins and 500 texts plus O2 Long Weekends. Obviously, like others have already said, taking either a new phone or credit ties you to O2 for a further 12/18 months. |

The phone is yours from day 1 , o2 dont want it back. If for any reason you cancel your contract or dont pay, they will just send the remaining months to you..
