More advice for a HD wannabe
Hi I'm about to (and have been for sometime but i'm really going to to it soon!!!) buy a HD TV probably a Samsung 46 (whether its a 71 or a 73 I'm not sure so there is a bit of dither there....) and i'll also get Sky HD at the same time.
The problem I have is what Home theater kit (5.1) to get - it would have to be relatively cheap - as i believe the quality of sound to be poor from the HD Tv. And some advice on hooking it up if I'm not asking too much - I presume the sky hd box can be connected directly to the 5.1 system. I current have a toshiba 36 picture frame with dolby 5.1 and the connection of that to sky+ and dvd player is straightforward. Hopefully this will be too. Any advice please? Paul |

There's an optical output on the back of the HD box, you simply connect that to the optical input of your 5.1 system.

With regards to the sound system check out here: http://www.projecthtpc.co.uk/htpc_audio.html
Just connect up the Sky HD to the receiver via optical cable. Edit: On the TV side, I'd check out this review of the Samsung: http://www.hdtvtest.co.uk/Samsung-LE40F71BX/ Last edited by philljp : 09-03-2007 at 15:37. |

thanks to all who responded...
I (honestly) had figured out connecting the hd box to the ht system. I was wondering was it possible on (now) limited (presumably aftre buying HDTV, SKYHD and stand) to get a good sub-£200 HT system (inc speakers) without resorting to an expensive amp and speakers. Philljp I take your point that the samsung is probably not the best but it would probably do my limited needs and I havn't decided yet to go for the 1080p version I may have to compromise on the 'half def' hd tv (le4673bdx) as funds are slightly limited thanks again guys. |

Full HD does indeed include "p" support at 1080 resolution, but the image quality on a Full HD set even with a 1080i picture should still be better, as the higher screen resolution of a Full HD screen matches up 1 to 1 with the 1080 signal (regardless of it being "i" or "p"). The lesser HD Ready sets have a lower vertical resolution so even 1080i images have to be scaled a bit to fit which drops the quality. From my quite limited experience of High Def, I can say that the only HD screen I was truely impressed by was a 37inch Full HD Sharp.
None of this will do anything to improve the SD picture generation. And the Freeview tuner inside will always be limited to SD pictures. Dave |
