Hello,

With TV's I have noticed more and more TV's are now using SRS TruSurround rather than Dolby Virtual surround sound.

Are SRS TruSurround and Dolby Virtual surround sound both by the same company?

Which is better SRS TruSurround or Dolby Virtual surround sound?

Why are TV's mainly using SRS TruSurround rather than Dolby virtual surround sound?

Will devices such as DVD players, digital boxes that carry the Dolby logo still have the full effect with a SRS TruSurround TV?

If SRS TruSurround is by a seperate company than Dolby will Dolby ever make a come back?

Neither Dolby virtual surround sound nor SRS TruSurround are real surround sound - they are just artificial imitations made by televisions to try and kid you into thinking that the sound that they are outputting is full Dolby surround. Note, this is the TV set that does this, not the digital TV reciever or a DVD player. I doubt whether either are even a patch on Dolby Pro-Logic.

True surround sound (Dolby Digital or DTS) is achieved by sending a signal from the DVD player (or Sky+ box for DD) to an amp capable of decoding that signal, and sending 6 discrete signals to centre speaker, left and right front speakers, left and right rear speakers, and sub-woofer. I can't see Dolby shaking in their boots too much...

Both are very poor compared to true Dolby surround and are much like the 'ambience' audio setting that many Stereo TV's have. Virtual Dolby (and I assume SRS) mess about with the sound to try and give more seperation to a 2 channel sound system. In my opionon it's often no better and probably slightly worse than good 2 channel stereo.

I assume that SRS is a cheaper option than Dolby (cheaper licencing) so that's why it's used?

I imagine Virtual Dolby was created so that Dolbv could licence out a lower cost alternative to regular stereo TV manufacturers, Dolby makes money from the technology licenced to the manufacturer and the manufacturer gets to put the Dolby badge on the TV and use the words virtual DOLBY SURROUND SOUND.
