Where exactly is Dungeness?
Is it a real place? Ive not heard of it before. I assume its on the South coast due to the shingle on the beach. But what a truely odd place, all these deralict huts scattered all over the beach? Are they really there? Has anyone ever been there?
Its seemed so random that I actually want to go there now

Dungeness is a real place in Kent. Its main claim to fame is the nuclear power station there. Dungeness is at one end of the Romney Hythe & Dymchurch Railway, and has two lighthouses (one of which is open to the public).

Here you go -
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dungeness I used to go on holiday there when I was a kid, really weird place - I don't know if its still there but near the acoustic mirrors is a lake full of medicinal leeches. |

That pub/b&b place that Kevin went was a right dump too.
I saw the lighthouse, and also that main road that seemed to run right along side the beach. Do people live there? Are there caravan parks/hotels there? |

Kent - and it's one of the most atmospheric places in SE UK
![]() Not sure how Kevin got back so quick from it though - it's a good 2 hours drive away! |

Only one in use as a light house. And that "main road" by the beach? That's not a main road. And there aren't any bus stops in Dungeness. Not the last time I went (6 months ago) anyway

Duh! Kent, of course. Why are people pretending not to have heard of it, or where it is? It's famous because of Derek Jarman's garden.

Funny it is near Beachy Head, the scene where Phil Daniels's character threw himself off there in Quadrophenia

Where exactly is Dungeness?
The exact co-ordinates are:
Latitude: 50° 54' 57" N Longitude: 0° 58' 38" E See the satellite image here. Zoom out a bit to see the power station on the west. |

I can see Dungeness from the coast where I live on the South East Kent coast. It has a nuclear power station (currently being decommissioned) and a nature reserve. It's kind of in between Romney Marsh (now tell me you haven't heard of that!) and Camber Sands and it sticks right out into the sea. Goodness only knows why Kevin was there! It's not the sort of place that one accidentally gets off!
It's got a couple of good lighthouses though, and you can go up the old one for a small price Great for kids. The RH&D Light Railway (Romney Hythe and Dymchurch "little train", you know, the one you can ride on and wave at the cars and people as you go by - and they sit and get peed off with you for blocking their way...) stops there, it's at the end of the line. I guess it's the end of the line for a lot of people .P.S. I commend the OP on being able to spell the name, especially if he/she didn't even know it was real. I've lived here some years, and been there several times, and I always want to spell it Dungeoness (which it isn't). Last edited by pammi_i : 10-03-2007 at 08:53. |

Dungeness is near me. On a clear day I can see the power station.
Its a very odd place to live. It always looks so isolated when I go there. Derek Jarman lived there and his house is lovely along with the garden he made. Quite a few copy cats have copied his work in theirs too. The lighthouse is fun to go up. |
