Soaps enocurage teen drinking says survey
In a survey in The Food Magazine, it was revealed that 18% of scenes in Hollyoaks features alcohol. This was followed by Coronation Street where alcohol is featured in 17% of scenes, and it is featured in 16% of scenes in both Emmerdale and EastEnders.
Home and Away came out best, with just 6.7% of scenes showing alcohol consumption. During the two-week survey period alcohol appeared as the most dominant food group in Hollyoaks, appearing in almost 40% of background scenes. This is all the more surprising considering that Hollyoaks is the soap that claims it is the UK's most watched teenage drama serial. Study author Cally Matthews said there was a real danger teenagers could be desensitised to the dangers of alcohol. "Soap shows are awash with scenes showing alcohol being consumed as part of a seemingly healthy lifestyle and appearing as a normal part of everyday life," she said. However, Channel 4 have questioned the survey's findings: "If an underage character [in Hollyoaks] is shown drinking then the act is followed by a negative consequence, such as the character being sick or being severely reprimanded by a parental figure," said a Channel 4 spokeswoman. "This is in accordance with guidelines set up by broadcasting regulatory bodies and in keeping with the tone of the show." Full article: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/health/6434225.stm Quite an interesting article. Do you think soaps are in danger of 'naturalising alcohol consumption'? They do tend to feature heavily with pubs being the main focal point of each of the big soaps. Do soaps have a responsibility to show the negative effects of alcohol? And should the pubs play a lesser part in the soaps? It seems that the residents of Walford and Weatherfield drink almost every night at their local. Last edited by 'Sup : 10-03-2007 at 02:34. |

To be entirely honest, I think the world around us naturalises alcohol consumption. The ones out drinking are at the pub and not watching soaps.

It would be a better idea if they reduce pub scenes.

Well, if we're that easily influnced by soaps, why aren't we all out sh*gging our inlaws or having a full fry up in the local cafe every morning?

soaps do tend to show a lot of drinking but it doesn't mean they glamourise it. I'm a teenager and alcohol has never really appealed to me, despite the fact that I watch hollyoaks!

Oh lord, here we go...
why aren't people responsible for their own actions any more? These days, everyone's problem is someone or something else's fault. It's bloody ridiculous

They couldn't reduce pub scenes, there would not be a central point for all of the characters if they did. Pubs are what make characters that do not have a story together interact, so that it is more believable.
Maybe they should order squash and soft drinks instead of alcohol though..... |

I don't know whether they encourage drinking or not, but they certainly encourage other low standards of behaviour, such as the "get over it", "I'm alright Jack", bitchy, "me first" wag-style mentality...

How ridiculous! Its FICTION! It seems to me that people who make these stupid surveys need to get a life.
Teenagers will still drink even if television is banned. |

Nobody looks a soap character and says 'oh they did it so it must be OK'
Don't the alcohol and ciarette companies pay loads every time somebody drinks or lights up on screen because it is major advertising? |

not enough for soaps to be blamed for teen drinking. Teens'll drink if they want not cos of something on tv.

in my experience of teens who drink, most of them have 'better' things to do than stay in and watch soaps (such as go out drinking..

they could say this about anything, I work in a resturant and I see the regulars in there drinking every weekend, surely if seeing people drinking regularly in soaps makes me drink more (complete b**l s**t) then seeing the regulars would make me drink more too.
I don't drink that much, me and my friends just drink at parties and stuff so we can relax and have fun, not cuz we see people doing it on soaps and think "Oooo if they're drinking it must be good so I'm gonna drink too" that's just sad. the people in my school who are know for going out in town drinking a few times a week are the ones that don't watch soaps. all teens are bound to drink occasionally for different reasons, but none of those reasons are that they've seen it in soaps, I don't think many people really even notice the alcohol on screen |
