OP, it's on now, and no offence meant but I think you are missing the point. The point is that he is not there to be funny and in fact if playing himself as a miserable git. That's being made very clear in the writing. Whether he is or not is another matter...

Well, I doubt he forced himself on the show! He must have been asked, there are plenty who would like to do it. I think the Beeb owes him since having to sack an extremely good presenter ("Have I Got News for You?" hasn't been the same since!) for nothing that was hurting anyone else. It's not as if he's even a roll model for children - if he was I could understand it, but his humour is for adults and he never should have been sacked for it.

He wasn't meant to be funny. I'd be more concerned with praising the show for using this hour to portray just how important donations are to help ill people from all over the world.

I agree with you wholly there, but I'm afraid the seepage of Comic Relief into the whole of March is probably going to backfire. As soon as it becomes the commonplace it ceases to command attention. People suffer from overkill, not because they are uncaring but because they are human and that's what happens. If it's there all the time it ceases to be noticed.

When it comes to charitable events, less is very definitely more.

I'm of course all for comic relief, it helps thousands of people, but I can't help thinking that it's only mentioned cos the BBC feels it needs to, not because the writers actually care, it seems a bit contrived...

Now THAT was a good speech from the receptionist! It might even get me over my own charity fatigue

The BBC's remit has tradionally been one of public service, hence the licence fee and no commercials. I guess they regard charity as a public service of sorts. They also show Children in Need, probably for the same reason.

The point is that hopefully someone will care, somewhere, and it's irrelevant whether the writers or producers or even the performers care, as long as we do.

Well considering the writer is Richard Curtis, I think we can taken as read that he does care.

Yes, I like the character of Nathan, you always need a villain, and he does villain really good.

How contrived was Alice's speech? I thought it was cringe worthy.

i thought it was a very good speech, and seemed to make some sense of the programme. The character has been sadly underused and it's nice to see her finding a voice. I hope she speaks up a bit more in the future. It's lovely to see a new character who is a young girl who isn't a standard straight long blonde/brunette fake boobed WAG wannabe
